Slow Wi-Fi on S8 Plus and Desktop but Fine on Mi Box

I just upgraded my internet plan from 25/5 to 100/40.

On a laptop connected by ethernet i record a download speed of 80 - 100 using fast.com

On my android tv Mi Box connected by wifi i also record a download speed 80 - 100 using fast.com.

So I'm quite certain that the plan upgrade has gone through and it is achieving the right speeds.

However on my S8 plus (even if next to the router) i only record a download speed of 35 using fast.com

On my Inspiron 5675 connected by wifi, i record a download speed of 28 using fast.com (but it is upstairs).

I also tried speedtest.net and the results were the same.

I only have one router, access point and SSID — is there any possible things i can try to get higher speeds on my phone and desktop?

do you have a dual band modem? possibly try the other band.

Have you tried deleting the wifi connection on your S8 plus, shutting down the phone, restart phone and reestablishing the wifi settings? (turn is off and on again)

    • powered down and restarted phone.

connecting to the 2.4 band increased the speed significantly on my phone! Now ~70 instead of 35

connecting to the 2.4 band on my desktop also bumped it up to ~40 instead of 28.

So the solution is to just connect to 2.4 on my phone?

Is it normal for the phone to be slower than the mi box even if they're next to each other? (when both on 5 ghz band)

      • Could be that the WiFi module on the S8 simply isn't as powerful. As a smartphone it's got so much tech under the hood packed into such a small space and has to optimise everything for battery efficiency.
The Mi Box is fatter, and doesn't have nearly as much under the hood or a display and battery to worry about.

  • Do you have an AC router? If so, you can try giving your 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands different SSIDs and then connecting your phone to the 5GHz one (just for troubleshooting, you'll still want to enter the 2.4GHz details later - or go back to single SSID - because you might need it when too far away for 5GHz). Perhaps your Mi Box is connecting on 5GHz and your phone is connecting on a more congested 2.4GHz band?

    • both were connected to the 5Ghz band — i connected the phone to the 2.4 one (as per above comment) which saw it improve dramatically.

I'm not a techie, but i just assumed that both the Mi Box and s8 would have performed similarly when at the same distance. .

  • mi Box connects via AC, the S8 might only be N

    • S8 supports 802.11ac in hardware. OP - is your phone on power saving mode at all?

      • nah it's not.

Is there a way to check if im on N or ac?

        • When you go into Wifi Settings, tap on the SSID name once and it should tell you the Network Speed (For example, on my 5ghz AC network, it seems to top out at 650 MBPS)

Usually on an N network, the speed can vary from 50~192mbps, maybe up to 300mbps in channel bonding mode. It depends on the model of your router and what protocols it uses.

You can also go into your router and pick a different AC channel.

Bear in mind 5ghz Wifi generally has very crappy range, even on top end and expensive routers. It's something to do with physics and how high frequency waves are not as good as bouncing off or penetrating objects.

You generally need to connect to 2.4ghz networks once you have more than a few walls or one floor seperating you and the router to get decent speeds.
