Laptop for a Photography Student

Please recommend laptop for a uni student who will be studying art (photography). Budget is up to $1200. (my current preference if Acer Swift 3 i7 but I'm not sure how dim its screen is as various reviews reported).

  • The xiaomi notebooks (air or pro) would be my top choice for this budget. Good screen, specs, dedicated GPU which is good enough for photo/video editing.

    • what about colour reproduction?

      Actually, nevermind lol. studying art.

      • Mi Notebook Pro puts out 280+ cd/m with good viewing angles and 87% sRGB. Comparatively the swift is around 69% sRGB and 200 nits. The screen in the Xiaomi is significantly better.

        • The one from gearbest comes with Chinese windows. In other places I read that this preinstalled windows can't be switched to English. The only way to have English is to reinstall windows. Do you know if it is available with English windows anywhere?

        • @picant: I don't own one, but I think you are correct - you have to do a clean install yourself if you want English windows.

  • I know this OZb but I haven't met any Photographers that not using a Mac yet, I been dealing with few and I don't own any Mac products.

    • +1

I agree that Macs are very common for photographers, but I know a couple who use Windows machines. The old reasoning used to be that the Adobe Suite ran better on Macs, but I doubt that's the case anymore.

    • Difficult to recommend a Mac for photo editing at this price point :P
