iPad 2 (new $230) 32 GB - VERSUS - Lenovo Tab 4 8” 16GB $177

Wish to purchase a Bluetooth wifi tablet for senior who primarily wishes to use it for the Apple Music APP, but may later use it for other apps. Does not want a small tablet and spend in vicinity of $200.

Considering:

iPad 2nd generation 32GB New
($255 less 10% eBay PRONTO code = $230)
e-Bay seller big-yard

Lenovo Tab 4 8” 16GB
(The Good Guys $177)
7” has only 1 GB ram but 8” 2 GB ram; has received some good reviews.

Any thoughts or suggestions please?

The iPad 2 is quite old now and will most likely suffer from very poor performance

    • Yes, that is one of the things I have wondered about. I use my son’s iPad Air 2 64 GB (about 2 years old now) which is fine, but that cost a lot more too.

The iPad Air 2 is 4 generations difference. I have an iPad mini which is basically an iPad 2 in a smaller form. The latest firmware it can support is iOS 9.3.5. It can feel a little sluggish, especially when browsing the web. I don't play music on it but would assume it shouldn't have any major issues. Works great as a ebook reader. Depends on what apps the user potentially will be using.

go for a used ipad 4.

there are a few on ebay for <$250.

this one (but the read camera is blury) for $209 delivered and then $199 with PICK5.

      • Have been looking in eBay but a bit wary of used ones; assumed they probably have faults.

I'm pretty sure it's stuck on iOS 9 too as well so won't be updated any more and as a result some apps won't work on it as they require new software

iPad 4 is stuck on iOS 10, like the iPhone 5 - both of them use the Apple A6/X.

    • Thank you for the information. Sounds like they should be selling those for much less. There was a choice between Refurbished and New on eBay, so I thought if NEW it would have to be, or eBay / PayPal to the rescue.

Anything below iPad 4 is painful. It took me 10mins to install the YouTube Kids app the other day on an old iPad and i'm on fibre.

iPad 4 is pretty slow too. iPad Air is a bit sluggish as well. Personally, I wouldn't get anything less than an iPad mini 4 or iPad Air 2, both of which have 2GB RAM.

Maybe look at going down the refurbished option - you will probably get more bang for buck. I wouldn't look at the Ipad 2nd Gen the technology is too old.

    • On eBay the refurbished iPads were about the same price as new, even from same seller as above.

iPad 2 doesn't have anything in it's favour quite frankly. I've got an iPad 3rd Gen that I use sometimes, it's okay for web browsing, videos and emails but forget most apps. Stuck on iOS 9.3.2 (or something like that)

Also - the fat 30 pin connector kind of sucks, especially for charging.
Oh, and 1gb of ram? It's the equivalent of a Windows PC with 2GB of ram. Barely usable and inadequate at best.

Yes one reason I thought the Lenovo 8" may be better; only version of those Lenovos that had 2 GB. Even the 10" had 1 GB.

  • Have bitten the bullet and purchased the Lenovo Tab 4 8" $177 from Good Guys. Ordering through eBay it came up as no stock at our local branches, but a quick phone call verified they had stock.

So far just charging up; connected to wifi fast, and have downloaded an 898mb update it wanted. Just waiting for it now to charge up before I do the install. It looks and feels pretty nice. Think I made the right decision here.

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions; I really appreciated them all. Cheers! ☺

    • Ps. "Apple Music" apparently not compatible with Lenovo as yet (not surprised) so I installed (streamed not downloaded so you need wifi access) music on the "Spotify" app; free version. Interesting that I found manh albums Apple did not have access to, and vice versa, so best of both worlds I guess. Don't know how / when you would find out that Apple Music app would be compatible.
