Where to Buy 'Vintage' Computers?

Heya!

Does anyone know where one could buy mid to late 90's PC's or parts around Sydney, preferably the Shire.

I've been doing searches for PC recycling centers, checked out Savlos and even on eBay, but not finding much :-(

Looking to build a retro gaming PC :-)

Cheers!

  • eBay is full of parts from that era. Searching for parts by their name?

  • Yep I am; so searching on eBay yields mostly international results at crazy prices (with shipping).

Like, I understand most of this gear I am looking for is becoming a collectors item and I'm willing to pay a premium, but I was hoping for something more local, and that I can verify that it is working :-)

I remember we used to have computer markets back 20 years ago, but they have seemed to have disappared :-(

Try the shop attached to your local tip. In Canberra we have something called the Green Shed that rescues sellable stuff from the tip (or you can donate to it for free instead of having to pay to put it in the tip).

    • Ah great advice! Thanks for that :-)

If you are not a stickler for authenticity you could get a vintage case and put a NUC or RPi inside it. Sort of like how people put modern circuits inside vintage radio cases. I've even seen an electronic project to simulate the fade in of valve radios, complete with added hum, hahaha.

    • This is an option. Only problem is I wanna run Win95 - Win98 natively, not in a VM.

      • Why not in a VM? You can make it so that you can't tell the difference. I have a VM XP driving a scanner via a forwarded USB port.

        • I've tried a VM. And although it's mostly awesome, certain games refuse to load. Perhaps I can do a bit more investigation into why this is.

The other main problem is 3D acceleration is mostly non existant. Even for basic stuff it struggles. Having a Matrox or Voodoo card would be awesome.

Plus there is nothing like having the original hardware ;-)

        • @adamdistefano:

What virtualisation stack did you use? Back in the day vmware supported hardware acceleration if I'm not mistaken.

        • @knk: Both VMWare and VirtualBox. Even DOSBox and I installed Windows 95

        • @adamdistefano: Have you tried GoG.com for old games? I have several childhood favourites working on my Win 10 PC.

        • @Quantumcat: Yep; got some :-)

http://www.overclockers.com.au/ has a retro section that people buy and sell old computer parts on.

I have a G4 IMac if you want!

    • Like a G6?

    • Apprecaite the offer; but I am after a x86 machine.

  • Turn private messaging on in your account settings and ask this guy. He sells/refurbishes vintage computers and other gear, or at least did. He posted about those things here on OzBargain, on at least a couple of occasions. He'll be able to point you in the right direction.
