8th gen intel Lenovo Yoga 920 vs Lenovo Yoga 720

Hello there,

I'm looking to buy a laptop tomorrow while JB Hifi is having a 15% off sale. I'm comparing two models of the Lenovo Yoga right now. They are both the same price

Options A:

Lenovo Yoga 920

Option B:

Lenovo Yoga 720

……

I've heard the that Lenovo Yoga has sharp edges which is annoying when using the laptop in tablet mode. Has anyone got any experience with either of these models?

Thank you

  • I am currently in the same position. I am leaning towards the 920 as I have tried out the hinges on both and the 920 is a lot more stable when tapped. Also it appears to have a better build quality as well. From other reviews I have seen, the sharp edges issues (I am assuming you watched the DAVE2D video) has been a bit overplayed and isn't as bad as some have said it is.

I recently bought the 920 (same spec as linked in OP) and I love it. Battery life is absolutely incredible, design is good and it feels solid. The sharp edges are nowhere near as bad as they're made out to be in Dave2D's review - you can go to JB/Hardly Normal and try it out for yourself as they have both the 920 and 720 on display.

The main differences between the 920 and 720 are the processor (8th i5 vs 8th i7), battery life is lower on the 720 according to reviews, 2 lanes of TB3 on the 720 vs 4 lanes on the 920 and of course the design of the two. Also note the 13.9" screen on the 920 vs 13.3" on the 720.

Hardly Normal sells an identical 720 to JB's but with 16GB RAM. I haven't seen it elsewhere though.

    • I went off and bought it a few days ago and man, does it get hot! The fan is so irregular it starts loud goes soft,, this is after all bios, system updates ect. I plugged my laptop to power when it was closed on my bed. An hour when I went to pick it up it was almost hot enough to burn me. I woke it from sleep and then the fans came on, then slowed down even though my machine was insanely hot. Have you experiences these things?

      Thank you

      • I just bought one as well and was having the same issues. After a bit of searching I found this fix in a forum post, and now the fans barely kick in at all. Solved all the concerns I had. Also I would advise against leaving the laptop on your bed as it can block the vents and limit airflow.
Enjoy the laptop though! I have been loving it especially after I sorted out that issue.

      • Mine definitely does not get up to almost burning temperature - it's actually quite good compared to how hot my previous laptop (Acer Aspire V5) became, despite the fan constantly being on. I've been using the 920 for the past few hours (web browsing, Youtube, Spotify) and the palm rest area feels cool with the base very slightly warmer. The fans haven't kicked in, which they shouldn't over light stuff like this. When they do, mine does the same thing where they starts louder but I think it's normal. They seem to have to get going for about 1-2 seconds where it's a bit louder before going down to a moderate speed.

With the fans spinning on the slow mode when the machine is extremely hot, I don't think that's normal. I just ran a CPU stress test on mine and the fans stayed up at the max speed you hear when they start up.

Are you on BIOS version 5NCN29WW? I think you should give Lenovo a call and explain the problem. Also try charging it on a table to see if the same issue occurs because the bed might be insulating the heat too much while the battery is charging.
