Tablet for Reading or E-Reader with Tablet Functionalities

Hi,

I'm looking for something like a hybrid between an e-reader (easy on eyes while reading) and tablet with internet access and ability to read PDF files without converting to different reading formats like .mobi for Kindle.
Probably in a 8 inch form but could be a bit smaller or bigger.
I know about Amazon Fire but it's basically just a tablet with Amazon software.
Is there anything like it?

Would welcome any suggestions!

Thanks!

  • I have recently bought OZBargains favourite Lenovo P8 from Gearbest for approx $181. So far very happy for the Full HD IPS screen, Snapdragon 625, Near Stock Android and Decent Battery Life.

I use the Kindle app to read kindle collection and Moon+ Reader for other formats

Good to hear it's decent. Still waiting for mine to arrive from the last deal (landed in Australia on Tuesday, so can't be far off now!)

Can't beat eInk readers for reading novels. If you want to read on a tablet then say goodbye to having good vision as it will ruin your eyes. Wish I realised this before getting my first Kindle.

The problem with Kindle is that it's a mess to read PDF files on it - you need to convert it to Kindle format I think.
Also would want to open files for reading from Google drive or just from internet.

      • Totally agree re: pdf files. Need the oversize one for that.

I've read textbooks on the Kindle (Accounting textbooks pdfs for CPA, text heavy with diagrams),

There was no need to convert it, but yeah it's not exactly the smoothest or easiest thing to read with the textbook's page size.

    • Wish I realised this

Sorry, what damage are you referring to other than that outlined in marketing materials.

Because billions of people are staring at screens reading stuff all day and nothing is happening other than increased risks of shortsightedness which can be partially mitigated by taking breaks and not staring at something close.

Best of both worlds - eInk screen and the ability to natively open PDF documents and more. Quite expensive compared to a Kindle and also you would have to import one as they aren't sold in Australia. They have 6 inch to large 13.3 inch screens. I suppose a larger A4 size screen would be perfect for PDF documents specially for ones with technical drawings and illustrations.

    • Or you can get one from Aliexpress

    • Do you own one? If yes, how its internet abilities. I don't need it for heavy browsing but would be nice getting files from internet without connecting it to PC.

      • Sorry I don't. Around 2016 I was looking at purchasing one for the same reasons as yours but was somewhat cost prohibitive at the time. Since these are running Android I'm sure the browser experience would be quite good (grayscale of course and probably with slower refresh rates)

  • Other trouble with a tablet is battery life. I use one as an e-reader, and keep forgetting to put on charge.

    The kindle battery lasts weeks

  • I have been using a Samsung Galaxy for about 4 years. You can download kindle for it or search for another E reader application (Moon reader is a good one). 179.00 at the Good Guys.
