The Pixel 2 XL is a much more premium phone than the one plus. I’d go with the pixel for many reasons, like its camera, it’s stock android, unlimited google photos storage, superior hardware, regular OS updates, and build quality, just to name a few.
But really it depends on your budget and whether those things matter to you ^^

Have you held a Oneplus5T in your hand? I would seriously debate your claim that its a much more premium phone than the Pixel 2 XL. The OnePlus 5T looks and feels much much better than the Pixel IMHO.

The OnePlus loses out to the Pixel in only two categories. The camera and local support in case anything goes wrong.
The hardware of the OnePlus is better than the Pixel except for the camera. The OS is almost vanilla and I have found the few tweaks that are present to be quite good actually. It gets regular software updates as well and unlimited google photos storage can be had on any android phone.

      • Agreed. I had the OP5T and had to sell only due to tax reasons. Needed a phone plan and the $59/pixel 2 xl looked good.

Was going for Pixel 2 XL but feels pretty plasticky compared to the OP5T and now considering the S9plus 74/m

    • You are right on the ball with the response, thank you!
I have, and it does definitely feel premium no doubt.

I feel like its relative to what you want to spend. As "WheresMattDamon" has suggested, the Pixel 2 XL because it has more OS support, better camera and you would have a better warranty. However, it comes at 1.5 times what you would spend on the OnePlus 5T. I have recently just purchased OnePlus and am absolutely happy with it (8+128). For me it came down to price and i will probably be upgrading in a year.

Both are great phones! If you are willing to spend the price of the Pixel 2 XL, i would purchase that.

    • Can I ask whether you've had the issues I bought up in markb28's responded post?

This will help me clear up whether this was just my device!

Buzz me if you need clarification of the issue.

      Thank you

      • MY only issue with it would be the camera. Android software will always perform better on an Android phone.
Compare the camera with a flagship from only 2 years ago and the OP5T will win everyday.
If it is something that you need to rely on then go with the Pixel 2 XL.

Would be interest as to what you end up with and if you are satisfied.

Just had the pixel 2 xl for a day or two, man the camera is awesome, having tested a few, it is the ultimate android phone and will keep getting better with software updates. Ultimately switched back to iPhone though as I'm locked in :(

    Pixel 2

  • depends on how much you want to spend

    • Money's not an issue, just a choice game. So many of them!

  • I'm in the same boat. Ended up just getting a Pixel 1 for $400 second hand. Google has bought out HTC's phone making manufacturing so the next Pixel will be made by HTC. I'd wait but if you can't I'd got the 2XL.

  • This is the same two phones I'm considering to replace my recently bootlooped nexus 5x.
Warranty is a consideration for me. From what I can tell, the 5T is only available as a grey import, so getting a 5T repaired or replaced is going to be a battle and probably take ages. The pixel can be purchased from a local retailer covered by the ACL.
Does anyone have experience with a retailer offering a useful warrantee for oneplus?
Finding au retailers stocking the pixel, either XL or standard with specials at the moment has been hard since the last JB deal finished in Jan, although Telstra offers a free hone mini. I'm not sure if there's any way to avoid paying full retail with Telstra using gift vouchers or the like, or local retailers with genuine AU stock for cheaper.

Support for the OnePlus is the only gripe. When they did a soft launch in Australia some months ago they had a 15 day no hassle return policy and I'd imagine warranty would of been an ease. However with the current situation due to being grey imports they'd most likely send it O/S to repair unless they have their own mobile repair technicians.

You're right on the ball with the pixel. After seeing a device like the OnePlus at such a price point, swallowing the price tag of the pixel 2xl takes a bit, then again it's from one of the biggest corporations and has the coverage and ease of support+ updates.

The only way I've seen being about to get the 2 XL cheaper than the 1500 RRP is to buy second hand off eBay and be confident about the descriptions given and condition. I know of friends who've done this and had issues, went back to the physical retailer and had a new exchange.

From all the reviews I've seen online the 2XL is still the best new age smart phone of the year 2017 and 2018, alongside Huawei Mate 10/Pro. Only thing stopping me from buying them also is support and software satisfaction.

Please see my response to markb28 for my views on the OnePlus 5T

If you have any other questions, let me know

  • I have the OnePlus 5t, great performance for the money but a few caveats:
    No local support if problems
Need to put an adapter on the dash charger (or buy an Oppo Aus charger)
Camera is just average, Pixel 2 is best of breed in this respect

I came from S7 edge and not really missing much from that phone (just the better camera).

Since I am hanging on for contract renewal in November after smashing the S7 edge, think I'll be happy with this until the Pixel 3 XL comes out - like where Google is heading with the Pixels and think they will nail it next time round.

    • You're downsides are exactly what mine were.

The camera could be so much better,

The main thing was I had an issue with the gallery where pinch to zoom was extremely buggy or delayed- compared to my S8 a single pinch out won't zoom in all the way unless you do this actiona few times. I would be interested to know if you have this issue with the default app-same issue occurs if you enter though camera thumbnail to pinch to zoom.

Dash charging is amazing, like really really good. But yes no Australian prongs.

The support is definitely a down side as it took me quite some time to get in touch with someone to respond through Facebook, this is what sets the big players from the small kids, but that is where money comes in..

      Upsides:
The fingerprint and face unlock is extremely reliable and absolutely beats Samsung in timing and accuracy.
The screen is incredible, set at around 10-15% on the 5T the display is brighter by a mile than my S8.
Battery Life is amazing also. Could easily get 2 days easy.
Price is overall a plus even if it bumped up from previous iterations, compared to the big players.

      • Yep agree with all this too.

      • Agree with all the points.

Bought an Oppo VOOC charger. Dash charge works even faster with it. 3200 vs 3400mah

Video camera stabilization is abit of a downside

I am returning my OP5T to get the $59/m Google Pixel 2XL for work purposes

OP6 looks even better! But the Xiaomi Mi Mix2S looks even better! SO many new phones coming out this year!

        • You are 💯 right. You just can't keep up with tech right?!

        • @jnathanc:

Yep.. especially Oneplus you'll never keep up.. they release a new phone every 6 months lol
