Woodworking or Carpentry Classes without The Certificate?

I'd like to learn some carpentry skills on the side along with my 9-5 desk job but I'm not looking for those three year courses that's offered at TAFE with a Certificate at the end.

Is there such thing? Maybe something along the lines of an evening Spanish class but for carpentry would be appreciated.

You could do a cert 2 pre apprenticeship at tafe which would be an intro to the full apprenticeship. Would learn a lot but it would only go for a couple of months, unsure where you'd go from there.

    • Thanks, I'm still doing some preliminary research but are these things taken by absolute beginners with no knowledge of how tools work?

I'm an office worker but would like to try this purely for recreation.

A significant part of the Cert 2 Building and Construction (Pre-Apprenticeship) is Occupational Health and Safety, with a focus on obtaining the White card credential to be allowed to work on building sites.

Obviously OHS and safety int he workshop should be a part of any course where working with tools is required but perhaps a short course would be more focussed on carpentry/wood working as a hobby than skill development to continue in the trade.

I realise that you are in Sydney but the following link to Holmesglen TAFE here in Victoria shows you their Short Course guide - your local TAFE will have something similar, although different TAFEs do have different specialties so you might have to compare a few.

  • It might help to know where you are. They certainly exist in Adelaide.

Check local community groups, we've got one nearby where the yearly fees are something ridiculous ($60ish I think), and a couple of bucks each time you go to pay for coffee & biscuits type thing, and all of the machinery you can use with experienced old folk who're happy to share their knowledge with you :)

Possibly restricted to the joy of country living though…

See if f you can find something similar in your area.

  • Local community colleges run classes like this, woodwork, languages, cooking, yoga etc
    normally after hours and weekends

Your location says Sydney - I have a friend who has been attending these term time classes for a while and has learnt so much woodworking techniques from Paul.

    • Thanks, this seems good!
