Adl to New York Redemption Flight. Who's The Best Value?

Hi all, GF wants to do NYC. Redemption flights are the goal. Not sure if being in Adl will make much difference in points required/ taxes. I guess who is the airline alliance we should be looking for and what are the chances of finding ability?

Or any loopholes. Ie start from another city, or maybe Asian country etc?

Cheers

  • Who do you have points with? When are you looking to go?

Initial thought would be to go via Singapore or Honk Kong.

    • We sign up for any deal that is offering points, so around (each) 200k of Qantas and velocity, 100k amex MR (will sign up for another 100k soon).

Air Asia/ Scoot etc don't fly out of ADL though? but assuming we take a redemption to Melb or Syd first, then on to SIN/ HKG and then direct to NYC with Cathay / Singapore Air?

Or are we better off taking a redemption direct to LA, or SanFran or etc etc

      • You're best off making a redemption straight from ADL - often the cost of a small positioning flight like ADL to MEL/SYD will be included in the cost of the longer segment from MEL/SYD to NYC. You'll just pay $20-$30 more taxes per person.

  • How many points do you have and with what programs?

    • 200K Qantas, Velocity and Amex MR.

Unfortunately not enough for a J280

      • 200k in each or combined total of 200k? If combined, what is where?

  • I think HKG is the best value. Asiamiles (Cathay Pacific) from MEL-HKG-NYC is 110,000 Asiamiles in business class one way. Availability seems pretty good - better than trying to get Cathay Pacific via QFF from my investigations of this route.

    • So book through Cathay's search engine? (do you need to be an Asia Miles member to look them up?). Might be no penalty from ADL vs MEL

      • Yes you'd book with Cathay direct, but based on your points above, probably not a viable option. Free to join asiamiles to search.

        • So only Amex MR points would convert to Asia Miles (1:1)? Maybe Cathay Out, Qantas / Velocity return?

        • @tunzafun001:

Depends on your breakup of points - between QF/VF & MR…and what time of year you're looking to go. Peak season to NY, you're pretty much going to be having to get them >11months out.
