Best NBN Modem Router < $300

I was just wondering if anyone could please give suggestions for a new modem router, I live in a 52sq house so it is fairly large and the phone point is downstairs in the kitchen which is central.

the rooms at the front end of the house struggle to get a wi-fi connection, I have tried range extenders but you lose internet speed.
I am currently just using a default bigpond modem router. I'm open to all suggestions and hopefully it'll cost under $300

  • Any ISP supplied wireless modem/router will be crap compared to a proper Wireless Access Point (WAP).

Keep the default Bigpond modem/router as your modem (converting Internet data from Bigpond) and router (sending packets around your internal network) only. Then turn off the Wi-Fi component of it (just to reduce any possible interference) and reduce power usage.

Can you run an ethernet (CAT6) cable from the kitchen to upstairs? Then get 2 UniFI UAP's (under $200 for the pair). These things are amazing.

If you can't run an ethernet cable, then get a UniFi UAP LR (Long Range) and just put that in your kitchen.

Are you FttN? there's a bit of difference in required equipment for different connection types. I picked up a TP-Link VR600 for my FttN connection cost $100 on ebay and does the job well. With FttN you need to get a modem that is VDSL compatible (I think). Whirlpool has some good threads.
