Unclaimed Money - State Government Searches Have More Records/Info than ASIC/Moneysmart

hi all

my mum (in SA) received a letter today from a Melbourne law firm offering to put her in touch with some lost money ($450 approx) for a fee.

the firm checked out, but being the good Ozbargainer i am i decided to look for the lost money myself, nothing on the ASIC website (i have looked there quite a few times) then i thought perhaps there is a state government website, sure enough each state has one, by putting my surname into each states unclaimed money search i found the $450 of my mums, and also another $500 of my brothers and his wife (we are negotiating on the finders fee on that one!)

I also found another one for my Dad in QLD, just $120 but thats alot to a pensioner!

I assume organisations send the lost money to wherever their head office is.

All of this is probably common knowledge.. but it wasn't to me so i thought it worth a share!
