TRS claim and AmEx lounge during Domestic-International Transit at SYD

Hey guys, got my first ever trip to America on Tuesday, and looking for some advice.

I'm flying out of MEL on QF426 (11am-12:25pm), then hopping onto the big 15.5hr QF7 SYD-DFW leg (2:40pm).

My question is regarding the transit in SYD and whether the 2hr15min transit time is enough to:

  • Get a TRS claim done (using the app of course)

  • Check out the AmEx lounge using my Explorer

  • Make the QF7 flight on time.

I understand that there's separate terminals for domestic and international at SYD which makes this a complicated proposal, but if anyone's done this trip and can provide insight that would be much appreciated :) There's a poll too if you'd like to use it!

Thanks guys,
MathNerd

Ha, I put qf426 into Google and it tells me today's flight is delayed 55 min. Good luck on Tuesday.

      Ah damn! That's a shame! Yesterday's was only 14 minutes late, hmmm…

You could be in and out of the AMEX lounge in 20mins if you are just after a coffee or a cold drink, and it is after immigration etc. so you can stay till close to your departure time.
    I'm not sure about TRS.

For TRS, don't queue up or you'll be there forever. Simply fill out the claim form in the TRS area, attach your receipt, and drop it in the specially marked boxed. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes and you're good to go. You'll have the amount in your bank acct within one or two weeks. Have a safe trip!

Thanks TA, excellent advice :) I've only ever done TRS claims at MEL not SYD so this will be a new experience. Thanks again :)

    • At least in Sydney (where OP will flying out on the international leg), they don't hand out the forms unless the queues are out the door.

  • Depends if your flight into Sydney is delayed and if there's a big/slow queue at TRS.

    • Was thinking along these same lines. Ah, can only dream of a perfect world with perfect timings…

  • Get off plane change terminals go thru security and immigration get to gate up to 1hr
Then boarding for second flight might start 1hr before take off time, a380 is a big jet second screening at gate for USA
You might have time for trs if you first plane is on time.
No time for Amex lounge Imo

    • Thanks!

  • QF7 was delayed 2 hours last Tuesday. If that happens again you'll have plenty of time to wait it out in the Amex lounge.

    • Nice, this is giving me hope :)

  • Sydney TRS has a wait of 5min to 1hr, depends on the time of day.
Make sure you pack deodorant and a spare shirt coz it gets very warm in the room

  • If its Tuesday around lunch I would think traffic at syd airport isn't too bad but you never know.

My humble opinion, you could make trs and a bit of time in the lounge but don't expect to be there for to long. You might be better off walking the shops and saving your lounge access for another time
