Samsung's Galaxy S9 & S9+ Reveal, Will You Be Upgrading?

New Galaxy has landed !! = D

As per the leaks, the focus on this years iteration of the S family is on the camera &
It looks pretty great so far!

The aperture is mechanical and can be switched manually from F1.5 to F2.4.

I'll probably wait for sales on eBay and upgrade from the S8+.

Do you plan on upgrading to either of the new S9 variants?
What colour would you get?

Pre-orders open today February 26), with the phones officially releasing on March 16.

I love how a $1.3K phone is now the norm. I remember a time when I had to think long and hard to spend $400 on my first S2

    • +4

yup $300-$400 is usually my limit. If I compare how much hardware I could upgrade on the PC for that it doesn't make sense to spend that much on a fondle-slab with a tiny screen that I can't read anything on anyway. Now get off my lawn.

      • +1

I actually spend a lot more time on my phone these days than my PC.
Probably still won't spend $1.3k on a phone but i will defs purchase a lower end laptop in the future and get a better phone.

    • +3

Most users won't pay $1.3k upfront for a flagship phone. Those who do are either brand ambassadors, tech journalists, social media influencers, or just very rich and like being early adopters of tech.

Unfortunately, the guts of the S9 isn't that much better than that of the S8. Same processor under the hood, a different location for the fingerprint scanner, a beefed up camera, but not game changer like the S8 was compared to the S7.

The vast majority will get the phone subsidized by a carrier.

      • +1

yep. I'm waiting for the S8 to now drop in price

      • None of the phrases I'd use to describe them.

      • +4

Not sure what you mean by same processor? It's an upgraded SoC just like every other year (Exynos 9810 vs 8895).

    • I remember thinking long and hard to spend $80 on my Sony Ericsson W810i. Apparently they launched at over $750 too!

the walkman series was pretty epic back in the day. All the cool kids in school used to have orange and white ones

        • +1

Might have been the only time I was cool.

        • +1

@lxndev: I wasn't cool (or rich) enough to own one :(

        • +1

@steff: Never mind the past mate, think of the future $41.99USD on AliExpress

        • +1

@lxndev: that's pure gold! I'm buying one so I can finally be cool!

look, if you are really smart, when you see S9 on the store shelf, then it is the time to upgrade your phone to S8.
never buy newly release product. the money you pay mostly goes to the marketing and research costs. very unwise to be honest (in my opinion).

unless the phone has some new feature that you cannot live without. maybe one day a new phone can make you breakfast then yes doesnt matter $$$ i will buy it.
but look, that phone is just still a phone. why pay $$$??? geee

    • +1

Usually don't need to wait for the next generation though. For the S8, it was down to 700$ in June and 600$ in August - probably won't drop much further than that.

      • you'll never know. best bet is to see couple weeks AFTER S9 in the store (ie people can buy them). some rich boys (and girls) will running camping to get this phone then sell their old one cheap.

      • Are you serious? Are you talking in £, because even then I'm not sure if that's true. Could you please find a deal that is at that cost? A friend asked me to find the cheapest S8 around November I think and I think he'd just missed out on the best sale yet which might have just broken $900. PLEASE show me where you found a $600 sale in August. I'm searching through S8 sales at the moment and cheapest I can see (Expired) is $687.

Honestly, if it was $600 in August, it must be less that that now, and my gf really needs a new phone. I'd be very grateful, thanks.

        • The Good Guys had $200 off, $100 EFTPOS gift card + 20,000 + another $90 or so back from TRS

Upgrading your phone just because a newer one's coming out? Are you sure you posted this on the right website, because that's just not the ozbargain way.

      Thats the iPhony way

I was a fairly early (a few months in) S7 Edge user. While the phone is good, there are a number of things that are not great and is really making me think twice about upgrading to the newest "flagship".

Handling the Edge takes some getting used to. While it seems virtually bezel-less phones are the go these days, I spent months learning how to hold it so as not to bump the screen while using it. Having finally got the knack, I feel like the Edge in particular is not as practical as some other phones.

The other thing that I'd love to see a return to are front facing speakers. I used to use the top end HTC (M7?) that had front facing, "stereo" speakers. This was great for watching video as the sound actually comes towards you. The Samsung (and indeed, the HTC now too) just has the basic speaker on the bottom.

I feel as though phones may have reached a "high plateau" now and the new ones simply don't bring that much more. I've always been a bit of a "flagship" phone user to take advantage of the newer features, but just don't feel I'm getting that bang for my buck these days.

Also you have to be extra careful with these phones too, its far too easy to crack the curved edge of the screen. I'm on my second phone and just cracked the screen at the weekend :( Will prob get a S9 later this year but staying clear of the curved edge phones, they're nothing more than a gimmick.

      • +1

I think you're right re. the gimmick of the curved edge. Other than being somewhat aesthetically pleasing, I have got no use from it at all, and per above, it has caused usability issues.

      • +1

Will prob get a S9 later this year but staying clear of the curved edge

        How is this possible?

        • +1

Oh shit you're right, I thought only the S9+ was curved. Looks like no S9 for me then!

    • Im the opposite here, I have a thin plastic back cover on my S8 and never accidentally touch the edge of the screen. Also I use edge panel a lot for speed dialling or launching frequently used apps.

Have you guys tried using an S8 with a cover?

Now that Im aware of it I realise i am always holding the phone almost like a waiter presenting a plate though…

      • It's better since I put a basic soft plastic cover on it, but not perfect. Ironically, this cheap "no name" cover is far better in this respect than the you-beaut genuine Samsung flip cover I sprung a hideous amount for originally. Definitely never again on that point.

You're right thought about still needing to be quite precise in that way you hold it. This of course gives me constant dread that I don't have a good grip on it.

  • How come you want to upgrade if you already have an S8? Avid photographer?

I bought an S8 last year after having enough of my beaten S5. Keeping up that cycle going, hopefully I won't upgrade til S11.

    • agree. s8 is MORE THAN ENOUGH for a phone. far out. its a phone. the new ones wont be able to fly. still a phone.

    • +1

I was using Note 3 since release until the S8 last July when it went on sale for like $780 &

If the S9 drops to that price with in its early life as the S8 did I'm likely to purchase it as it fits into a use case scenario for me, although there are many financial advisors I didn't know I had in this thread who like to say otherwise : P

      • +1

Ok awesome! Haha always happens on ozb. I just hope there are enough differences between S8 and S9 that you will use and enjoy!

  • Lol at their "mechanical Aperture" adjustment. Mate 9 ranges from F0.95 to F16 which was released almost almost 2 years now (3 Nov 2016). As usual, Samsung is advertising their latest discovery as a "new trend" which was already a part of phones released at the same time of their S7 models. Good on you Samsung! Be more creative and innovative for a change.

  • Does it have a stereo jack?

    • yes

  • Where's the voting option for: "I'm perfectly happy with my <$200 Xiaomi phone". The only thing I would like my phone to do better is take pictures, but if I really want to take nice photos I have a nice camera, I'm not going to buy a $1300 phone just to get a better camera which isn't nearly as good as my actual camera.

  • +1

There needs to be an option for "I'll buy whatevers good when my current phone breaks"

  • I like Huawei Mate series but not willing to spend more than $500 for current model.

  • I can get S8 on $59 plan which ends tonight. Should I get it or wait for it to get cheaper in a week or two?

  • My S6 is on its last legs so I might as well.

  • I usually update our mobile phones every 2 years (currently have the S7E), but I've decided to give the S9/S9+ a miss….not much of an upgrade over the S8/S8+.

Hopefully the S10 will have the fingerprint sensor back on the front under the glass. Also the S10 should support the 5G network launching early next year - both to me are worth holding out for. Also e-sims should start appearing in phones around this time too, which should free up a liitle more room in phones….might even allow for bigger batteries.

    • nothing worse than putting your finger on the camera…

  • When should we start to see S8 prices fall?

  • now it's my time to buy S7 Edge! hehehhe
