Powershop: Drops Rates in Vic (Maybe Other States)

Got this email from Powershop today. Checked rates and the “standard rates” have dropped as of today.

Being greener on the inside has its rewards and we’ve got good news. Some seriously good news.

As of today we’ve reduced your energy rates in Victoria – and it’s thanks to renewable energy.

Let us explain.

We recently purchased even more renewable generation assets and signed agreements with new wind and solar farms (in VIC and NSW) to buy energy at below current wholesale rates.

On average, customers in Victoria will be receiving a reduction of around 5% on their total bill - the even better news is we’re hoping to do this more in the future.

We get that the energy industry is incredibly confusing - discounts, rates and deals are complicated, and the debate about renewables vs coal is never ending. We also know we’re far from perfect, but we’ve always practiced fair pricing. All our residential customers get access to the same discounts in their area, so you’re always on our best deal.

This price reduction proves continuing to do the right thing by our customers and the planet, doesn’t need to cost the earth.

I just left them. The rates were good but from what I hear not as good as Victoria. But they handled my account very poorly.

I purchased solar one month after signing up and then I accepted their offer for a free smart meter. It took 5 months for them to get all my meter readings up to date and to bill me. During that time I could not track my usage (they have an excellent web site which can track daily usage if you have a smart meter) or know the cost of my electricity till the 6th month in. Then it took me 2 months to sort it out only to find out they had me on the wrong tariff that whole time so I was overcharged for my power.

    {btw my electricity went up a few cents after the 1st month I signed up so once I my solar became active the bill ended up equalling almost the same as before solar.}

I checked Origin's rates and they are almost the same maybe slightly better if you get the 28% discount for mentioning that you found them on compare the market or Iselect online. And you do not have to pay months ahead (like Powershop) in order to get the lowest rate.

    Origin Rates for my area:
22.54824 inclusive GST (getting the 28%), .09 feed in
    0r
28.1853 inclusive GST (getting 10%), .15 feed in
    usage 155.111 cents per day

    Powershop for my area:
24.39 inclusive GST (If you pay months ahead), .128 feed in
    usage 163.89 cents per day

if your in the market to change, do keep in mind the months usage fee for comparison.
