GOLD MEDAL: AWC Vienna International Wine Challenge 2016
Runner up “Best Cabernet of Show” 2016 AWC Vienna
94 Points - James Halliday, Wine Companion

Wine Companion tasting note:
Shows that, when conditions are right, McLaren Vale can produce cabernet with convincing varietal character, needing no embellishment of lots of new French oak, bringing with it its own structure and texture. This really is a smart wine, with a juicy cassis component to finish it off.

Winemaker’s Notes

The exceptional 2013 vintage conditions guaranteed slow ripening and distinctive varietal character. We selected the best parcels of fruit from our “Orchard Block” which was planted in 1967 using the famous low yielding “Reynell Clone” of Cabernet Sauvignon and our 30 year old “Pig and Pony” vineyard. The wine exhibits a bouquet of lifted blackcurrant, violets and mint, with bramble notes and hints of cedar oak. With the palate showing intense briary blackberry, red currant and spicy black plum flavours, with hints of quince and red capsicum and Kalamata olive. This powerful yet elegant wine is framed by balanced tannins and subtle oak, finishing with great length.

    In case it helps anyone:

3.6/5.0 rating on the Possingham & Summers: https://www.vivino.com/wineries/possingham-and-summer/wines/…

3.9/5.0 on the Pirramimma White Label: https://www.vivino.com/wineries/pirramimma-winery/wines/pirr…

Generally anything above 3.8 is pretty good.

The ideal combo would probably be something like half Pirramimma White Label + half Beresford Cabernet Sauvignon (which overall gets better ratings: https://www.vivino.com/wineries/beresford/wines/mclaren-vale… - although the 2015 vintage is a bit weaker at 3.7)

    • Handy site thanks

They also have a mobile app. What's useful about that is it has a camera with a fairly decent database of wine labels, so you can take a photo of the bottle and it'll find the match about 75% of the time … Handy at restaurants when you want to find out more about what you're drinking. There's also a multi photo mode where you take a whole stack of photos and it looks up the ratings in the background, and shows their scores in the camera preview. Very handy at a bottle shop when looking for something reasonable in a certain category, just click away and pick the ones with the highest score. Definitely has its flaws (eg not enough ratings sometimes, label not always matching), but much better than nothing (have yet to buy a bad wine since using it).

        • Good to know. Wine knowledge has always seemed a bit arcane to me so I've relied on Halliday scores until now (that was the reason I found this deal). I don't really trust something as general as Dan Murphy's reviews, especially given how generous their 'wine panel' seems to be with scores. It's good to have an alternative.
