Want to go to The Spit today for lunch, and from what I can see it's only paid parking around there? Where would be the nearest free parking area I could go? Are there any nice, not too long walks in the area to make a distant parking point more palatable? I see there's a walk from Balmoral, but it's quite long.

The Spit itself is a pretty small area (i.e. the flat bit where the restaurants are). My bet is it will all be paid parking.
You may find some timed, but free parking somewhere along either Parriwi Road or Battle Boulevard (or surrounds), but be aware that both these roads are quite steep hills that may not be desirable.
Park on Parriwi Rd.
