        • Get an XBox1 (not an XBone.)

These are amazing tech wise. No battery (so safe around children), uses kinetic energy to send its commands to a hue system. Interesting gadget but the hue dimmers have more functionality imho.

No battery (so safe around children)

Oh shit, better get rid of all those kids toys which take batteries then….

      • No button batteries to clarify. But you can do whatever you think is right around your kids.

        • That makes more sense. They’re fine if they have a screw holding them in (as opposed to just the usual latch for regular AA/AAA’s).

        • @Porthos: yeah - the dimmer uses a button battery but it does lock with a screw. It should be safe enough as long as that cover is screwed back on.

They're cool but the dimmer switches are better. The battery free design means you have to apply a level of force to the switch which I don't think makes for a great experience. The battery driven dimmer switches are far more pleasant to use.

The dimmer switches are also way cheaper at about $34 from office works and now days if you want can be brought into Homekit and therefore used to control other things for those that are so inclined.

      • Yup agree - as noted in my comment :) (except for the level of force issue which I dont mind)

      • Each switch on the tap allows you to control a different set of lights, which is another point of difference to the dimmer.

        • I haven’t tested it myself but on my iPhone as this is a HomeKit accessory each button of the dimmer switch appears to be able to be mapped to a seperate light (or group of lights) or scene as well for what it’s worth. The Switch shows up in the home app as a single device with four configurable buttons. For now I’ve kept the default Hue behaviour though where one switch toggles on/scenes, one off and the others are used for level adjustments.

With HomeKit it’ll even work as a switch for non Philips HomeKit accessories.

May not help non Apple users (or at least houses without one iPhone/iPad for initial setup and a hub such as an Apple TV).

Tap is cool as a one off and if you have a lounge room that you want to do multiple scenes in, control lightstrips etc it might be good. It wouldn’t be my pick as something you wall mount next to your standard light switches to allow quick on and off of the lights for people not holdig their phone. Cost is prohibitive for that case.

@Smigit: the dimmer can also be configured similarly in home assistant - so agree it can be used for multiple sets of switched - just not on the basic hue hub.

Also agree tap is more useful as a roaming switch, near the lounge or bedside table, even in the bathroom if you like…

    • Damn, that's pretty cool.

  • Highly rate this. It's effective and can be used as a remote next to the bed for those super lazy individuals like myself.

Looking at getting a Hue starter kit plus a led strip. Absolute robbery for prices

    • +1

It was for that reason I ended up trying LIFX. Much better value and doesn't require a hub. I'm still interested in trying the hue system at some point, if the price is right.

      • LIFX was a serious option because of the high lumens but the price was not much better from my experience. I found a phillips HUE 3.0 starter from ebay. $209.

This same kit is $289 at bunnings/jb hifi and not really competitive anywhere else online. Not a bad deal

Thanks OP, always looking for opportunities to grow my Hue collection for the right price. Hue stuff doesn't seem to be on special very often.
