Second Hand Vehicle $10,000 Budget

I am single male looking for a second hand vehicle (~$10,000) -

(1) Live in inner Sydney suburb, street parking
(2) Bus to work in city, hence mainly week-end use
(3) Can accommodate a bike & surf board.

Your suggestions appreciated regarding -
(1) Type of vehicle
(2) Where to look (car yard vs private vs auction)
(3) What to inspect & check for (4) paid inspection service.

My thought is a small station wagon (Corolla, Hyundai i30) or Camry hatch back?

Best description I have ever read:
"Selling as is, not running, if it was it would be twice as much. was red and has been repainted silver. have purchased a new van & just want to get rid of it, my mechanic cant get it running. "

      • Opps, I linked the wrong one :P

        Great description though!

  • Honestly the best thing that would fit that criteria is a Z12 (2008-2014) Nissan Cube (hear me out). Low running costs for fuel and maintenance, being almost the same mechanically as a K13 Nissan Micra as well as massive amounts of room inside (you can easily fit a 26 inch mountain bike in there as well as a surfboard if you fold the front seat) and although not fast by any means, they are a very nice driving small car, I think its the best driving car in that class below the Polo and Clio. They are endlessly practical, a very well designed car and excellent value for money.

      This

      • Have a look at one for gods sake…………………satan himself built these

        • Have you actually had a look at one yourself? (I don't just mean in pictures or on the road) Granted they're not the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but from an interior and utility perspective they're excellent. 90% of the time you spend with a car is inside of it driving, not looking at it from the outside, and the interior and its versatility is where the Cube shines.

        • @justaperson:

          Cube shines

anything a cube can do a suv (and of course an hiace) can do better, except for may be fuel economy.

        • @whooah1979: I agree but it's a good alternative for someone who doesn't want to drive/park something as big as a Hiace or a mid-large SUV but retain similar levels of utility and have about half the fuel consumption of either of those.

I didn't know one of his requirements was to stay single

    Cheap ute

    Goget?

    • ^This

If you only drive weekends Goget would be ideal (and they have SUVs to fit your bike/board). Cheaper than owning a car too

    Bus?

  • It's not the $10k price, but $1500p.a. minimum running cost that is the issue.

A lwb hiace can accomodate 1,2 and 3. You can even throw a mattress in there for cheap accommodation on trips up the coast. No parking spots available? Not a problem. Just park in a loading zone, but keep an eye on the time limit. Not using it during the week? Not a problem. Rent it out and make some extra income. It’s economical to operate and maintain. A full tank of diesel is cheap and may give you 500kms.

    • ^ This is a good option, but make sure it's a 200 series HiAce (i.e. current shape) 2005 onwards, at least a bit safer than the old shitbox 100 series HiAce that finished late 2004.

  • A car is too much of a hassle and an expense, you have to pay for rego, insurance, tyres, servicing etc. If you don't need one for work, don't get one.

'02-'11 Subaru Impreza wagon. My '02 was extremely reliable, fun to drive and cheap on fuel. Plenty of space in the back too.

  • @ Op - v similar situation here. I would also recommend share car options like GoGet or CNR for your situation.

  • obviously no surfers here, knowing that there are times when you just need a car (sometimes at 5am)

A Subaru is perfect. Liberty or Outback; check whether the head gaskets have been done depending on the year.

Or an Impreza, I can fit a 7'4 board in there easily (although no passengers) and obviously roof racks. i30 or Corolla should also be able to fit a board

  • Toyota for sure. Yaris, Camry or Corolla.
