Exterior Home Surveillance Camera

Hi everyone,

So my wheelie bin got stolen, which is pretty pathetic considering they are free from council. The concept bothers me more so than the bin to be honest.

I was wondering if people could recommend external surveillance. What would be best in your opinion.

Wire vs wireless. Security on wireless setup. is any 1080p camera provide enough clarity or there is 1080p and 1080p…..

I am new to this. not sure what else to include. but will respond when I can.

Mainly after what you do in your home for exterior surveillance and what you would like to have done differently if you were to do it again.

Thank you for your experience and wisdom in adv!

I have a wheelie bin outside my place that doesn't belong to me. I suspect a neighbour was being kind and relocated the bins that moved or fell. It belongs to a house down the street but I'm too lazy to wheel it back.

I have left it on the curbside for 3 weeks straight, all my bins are taken in. If it's yours, have at it.

    • LOL.

  • considering they are free from council.

    we paid for ours.

    • I must be lucky. different cities i bet.

you must be lucky indeed. we keep paying every quarter/yearly.

        • ah i see. then there is an advantage to steal one.

You might be better off with a tracking device in your wheelie bin.

  • If your installing it on the exterior then don't go wireless.

Go wired. Either option will require you to use a power cable anyway unless you are getting one with a rechargeable battery, but that will be inconvenient since you will have to recharge it every day if you want 24x7 1080p and IR.

Wireless cameras offer no protection to the data, as most cameras have the SD card location on the back of the device. Wireless camera are also really easy to jam.

    • thanks mate. i thought wired might be way to go but more trouble and need to drill some holes and run cables. was thinking wireless with motion detection to help with Barry life but in reality is more compatible with what you said.

  • I wonder if it has occurred to any garbos to relocate some bins and watch the chaos that ensues.

  • Wired any day!

I would use IP cameras with POE so you can provide power/receive signal down the one cable. In terms of megapixel - more is always better :P Realistically, what MP you need depends on how far away your cameras are from what you want to be able to see (clearly! - just because you can see a person moving doesn't mean you can see who it is) and what lens you have on the camera.

That said, if you only want the camera for this one purpose, maybe a cheap camera with a battery and SD card will get you what you need without the much larger cost of going wired?

    • what consumer router supports POE ?

else need to buy POE switch

  • thanks mate. will look into your suggestions
