256GB Micro SD Card for S9+

Will be most likely picking up the S9+ soon and have opted for the 64GB model with the thought of adding in a fairly large size SD card. I was hoping to format the card so that it works like added internal storage so my question is around write speed. I am not quite sure on the lingo of SD card speeds with U3, class 10 talk so hoping for a little help. I am looking at a 256GB card and this is the cheapest U3 card I could find. I believe U3 can record the 4k @ 60fps. My only hesitation is that this card in the details says a write speed of up to 20mb/s while other U3 cards I have seen have write speeds of up to 90mb/s.

Will this card be fast enough to write the 4k video or do I need to look at another card?

    • Thanks for the reply. If the 20mb/s is fine to record 4k @ 60fps, what is the extra ~70mb/s write speed used for on the other cards? Is it just to transfer files onto it faster or something else?

      • The faster the write speed will result in smoother recordings.
The faster the read speed will result in better and faster playback time.

        • Alright thanks for the info.

Just going over the eBay listing again and finding the description a little confusing. It states both 20MB/s and 90MB/s write speeds. So I am guessing it has just been copy pasted from somewhere. If it is actually a U3 does that mean it is up to 90MB/s write?

The resolution and frame rate is not relevant to the write speed - it only matters at what bitrate the video is being recorded at.

U3/V30 is (supposed to be) guaranteed 30MB/s write speed, so it will be fine for anything up to 240Mbit/s - which is pretty much all phones (can't find specs for S9 but it seems the S8 was capped at 50MBit/s for snapdragon and 62MBit/s for exynos devices) and most consumer devices. Some consumer cameras such as the Panasonic GH5 will record at 400MBit/s - Even though it is "only" 4k 24fps, so they need the high speed.

The Evo + you linked will be fine for 4k recording. However I would not order from the seller you linked after checking their feedback (multiple instances of negative feedback for fake SD card within the last month)
