Is Groupon Dentistry a Bad Idea?

I am in pretty good health. Haven't had a significant health problem since getting my Appendix out 6 years ago.

It's for that reason I look at even the most basic singles private health cover as a waste of money. I simply wouldn't use it for anything except dental.

Does anyone have any experience in getting cheap/quality dental at an affordable out-of-pocket rate? I found this but am hesitant to trust any service that uses Groupon

  • I used a Groupon. I thought the Groupon wouldn't make a difference to the quality of service since they're looking for long-term customers and you'd think Australia would have pretty strict guidelines.

But then I've had issues ever since. Had terrible sensitivity for longer than expected and ending up with chronic pain that didn't exist before (that now needs looking into). This isn't necessarily the dentist's fault (maybe they revealed an issue that would have arisen eventually) but they are a bit like pest control in some regards ("no problems, no business").

I used it since dentists charge quit a bit where I live just for the X-rays

I would have some hesitations. Good dentists are usually booked out a week or two in advance (at least) and would not need to rely on Groupon to get business.

It may also work like portrait photographers who get you in with a cheap deal and then use high pressure sales to try and get you to spend much more money.

    Yeah… nah…

    Good dentists don't (wouldn't) use Groupon…

Sure, dentists are generally a Godless, Soul Destroying Mob that take all your money while hurting you. But even they have standards.

  • Although I agree with the sentiments of those above I felt I should clarify, based on actual experience, that good dentists do in fact use Groupon for marketing purposes. Of course I have mistrust of the industry as a whole but that's another matter.

Although you don't live in Sydney, you'll notice that Advanced Dental in Cammeray is one of the options and has plentiful, mostly perfect reviews online. It does take a while to get an appointment, however. But I can't fault them for quality of service (or the fact I had a dentist, hygienist and receptionist for an hour to myself in a fancy pants suburb for less than $60). I felt almost guilty but we'll see how I feel in a few months…

    • I'd have to agree based on my own personal experience. In fact I discovered my periodontal issue through my dentist visit purchased through Groupon, and although I don't go to the original clinic anymore (as have moved away from the area), it was one of the more positive experience I've had using a voucher.

I suppose YMMV, that was years ago where businesses maybe genuinely using it as a marketing platform. I'd suggest avoiding Groupon vouchers for things like car service as there's a lot of "hidden extras/conditions" attached.
