What to Buy from Vietnam?

Leaving for Vietnam today on a quick one week trip thanks to the Jetstar sales posted on this site. Any suggestions? Nothing too extravagant or preferably not food unless its really good but things that are unique to Vietnam. Will also consider authentic goods if they are substantially cheaper.

I will be in Ho Chi Minh / Hoi An (Da Nang) / Nha Trang

TIA :)

    fake northface gears!

    • +1 for the "genuine copy" Northface gear.
Bought a couple of waterproof duffle bags and was really impressed with the quality and price point.

    • I don't know about Northface gear but when I was in Vietnam I never encountered "prices too good to be true". The prices and experience were no different to a day of negotiation at Paddy's markets.

      • wow. learn how to negotiate better?

        • Ha. I read that and thought "holy cow, he is getting paddy's markets prices down to 75% off ticketed!"

leather shoes/belt/wallet/bag or tailor-made suit, shirt etc. :)

    • +1

yeah, wished I got a tailor made suit when I visited few years back

      • +2

I'm considering a return trip to get a couple of suits made. The savings would cover the air fare…

  • If you have not booked accom in Da Nang, I can recommend the Grand Jeep Hotel.
Its brand new and an absolute bargain.
I stayed there Feb 1st, had a beautiful room on the 17th floor and paid $21 aud per night inc b.fast with a discount code on Agooda.
There is a massive Japanese BBQ place a bout 2 blocks south of the hotel, look for the big crowd.

IN terms of buying stuff, your partner may wish to buy a traditional dress in Hoi An.
If you hit walking street up in Hoi An from dusk onwards you will see lots of Korean and Chinese dressed in traditional Viet clothing.

Tailored clothes in Hoi An - best is Bee Bee tailoring, not super cheap but the quality is great. Don't go to the markets for collectables- google fair trade markets that are handmade and employ locals.

Pop up greeting cards - even at the top end of prices $1 usd per card - still great value considering a basic gift card is $1-5 here. They also don't take up too much space. Stock up for birthdays, anniversary, weddings etc.

I bought a heap of these for about 20c each, probably still have about 50 left!

      • i wish i had bought more. they always get good remarks from the receiver.

  • In terms for food in Ho Chi Minh - this place was great value https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Restaurant_Review-g293925-d78…

    A Raiden hat?

  • If you are craving really good western food in Hoi An, check out Old Town
Its a couple of shops up from the Japanese Covered Bridge with the green lanterns

  • honestly, the best foods in VN are the ones on the street side, on the plastic chairs.

In saigon, look out for com tam, ban xeo and of course the pho

In hanoi, look out for bun cha, bun bo nam bo

    • been there, awesome quality and service

  • +1 for the Northface gear, the backpack and polo hat etc were great, some of the items like sunglasses can be fake and will be a hit and miss from the Ban Than market;

    Try the soft crabs here, cant wait to try it again;

  • We bought mens' shirts for about 1/3 or less the price you can buy here, bargained them down though because they ask for a price you would pay at a sale in Myer's to begin with.

Always suggest 1/4 th or less the price of what they ask for when you buy anything.

and this is so true "the best foods are the ones on the street side, on the plastic chairs." Breakfast was always Pho on the street for about .25 back in 2012.

      1/4 th

      One quarterth please!

What is your expirence with bargaining in VN?
How much time have you spent there and where have you visited?>

  • Vietnam war relic

  • Get a painting..
We bought a large one, and it's awesome.

Also tailored clothes - suits, trousers, shirts, etc.

Whatever you do, I do NOT recommend taking the economy seat on their trains.. so tight, terrible - get first class for the few additional dollars.
