Telstra or Telstra Alternative

Just moved into a new complex, and I made the switch to optus, service was bad so i called optus and they said "yup thats a bad area for our service" so they cancelled my plan.

Does this mean Telstra is the only one that will provide good coverage in my thick walled new complex?
the neighbour said they are with vodafone and have no problems.. but i thought vodafone and optus use the same towers?

  • Different companies. Just have to try VF and see. They may share the same physical tower or top of building but the backhaul will be separate.

  • Vodafone and Optus once had a tower agreement, but that didn't mean they had cells on every tower that they shared.

They've now moved away from the tower sharing agreement I believe. Their coverage can vary quite a lot.

Vodafone have a 30 day trial period you can use, so you're at no loss to give it a try:

  • I was under the impression Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all have their own towers and everyone else piggie backs off them

They are the one who operate the towers, the others are MVNOs who use the infrastructure but have their own customer base, billing, etc.

Who knows, buy a $2 telstra sim and find out

Nope… They all 'share' towers, but that doesn't mean the same coverage.

As above, buy a $2 voda sim and find out.

    • Yup, the only way to find out for yourself is buy a cheap sim from each network

  • I'd try Vodafone or one of their resellers ie. Kogan.

Buy some sim cards and give them a go, that's the only way.

You could look at maps, you could look on the acma site, cross reference the spectrums and towers with your location, looking for shadows…

However at the end of the day, nobody will know until you physically test them.

Could also speak to your neighbors, introduce yourself first, point to your door etc, say that you've been struggling with mobile signal and ask them what they're on and if they're happy.

  • You can use https://oztowers.com.au/ to find out where the cell towers are

Also if you're too lazy/cheap to get the sim card, just ask your mate and check their signal strength, for android its in the settings, for iphone type in 3001#12345#
