AMEX Platinum 75000 Free Points or Free Return Trip to Hong Kong $900 Annual Fee

70

Free return trip to HongKong if you sign up and are approved for the new AMEX Platinum card. Must spend $500 to get the 75000 points. The annual fee is $900 is a little steep but it is much cheaper than a return flight to HK. Currently QANTAS Red e-Deals return to HK are jusy over $1500. So you get a free return trip and a platinum card that gives you 1.5 points per $1 spent for a year. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

  • You'd have to be a VERY big spender to make the annual fee worthwhile. The free introductory points are good, though.

  • Approval Criteria

    • You are over 18 years of age.
    • You have a good credit history.
    • You have an annual Income of $100,000 p.a. or more.
    • You are a permanent resident/citizen of Australia.
    • If Self Employed you have been trading for at least 18 months or 12 months if you hold an existing American Express-issued Card.

Somebody with $100k income probably isn't reading OzBargain and would have been contacted directly. :)

      • Lol. greenpossum has a valid point there.

      • I most certainly read OzB everyday. Six figures in Canberra is barely enough given our house prices, fuel prices, et al.

        • Houses in Canberra are more expensive than Sydney, same applies to fuel? I didnt know that.

        • kctt - its true.

LOL I think you'll find there are a great number of people with 6 figure salaries on here…often we are the biggest bargain hunters!

Hmm, isn't today a workday? Now I know what's happening to my tax money. :P

        • We're not ALL public servants here! :)

  • re 75,000 points: "Offer only available to new Platinum Charge Card members who apply, are approved by 01 March 2011, and spend $500 in the first two months of Card membership"

wonder what you get in the second year.. just a big fat bill for $900 and no free trip ?

    • +1

You can always cancel just before the annual renewal.

      • most cards will charge you the annual fee as soon as you start the card.

        • Get the points, pay $900 fee, then next year cancel the card.

  • I just might get it.

CBA barred me from earning too much Amex points..

  • With paying my parents and siblings bills I am using around 100k a year on my CC.

    • The criteria is "You have an annual Income of $100,000 p.a. or more" not spending 100K.

      • +1

Though if you're spending $100k on the card and earning less than $100k, I can see the relationship going south real fast.

        • Income not declared :D

  • One the subject of this, why can't we get awesome deals like this but without the $900 annual fee. I.e. this person managed to do it for a few hundred:

  • Instead of the $900 annual fee, you can buy your ticket to HK yourself,
but it's a great bonus points offer though.

  • I own this card…AE give u the best service you can ever get….

900$ p.a. with unlimited number of supplementary cards…..is already a bargain if u have 7 ppl+ using the card, along with free travel insurance (without the need of paying the airfare with the card)….

but then the 100K income may not be easy for most ppl…they do ask for payslips when u join…

  • Oh…btw….75000 points I believe this is AE points….u dont have to transfer it to Qantas if u do not wish to…u can always transfer to virgin Atlantic which allows you to get a return flight to HK for 45000 points…

  • Suunyii: "without the need of paying the airfare with the card" I understood it is the condition of all GOLD and PLAT cards that AIRFARE must be purchased on card to get FREE TRAVEL INSURANCE? Please provide link of otherwise?
Sure its unlimied Supp cards? Link?

  • well….when I got it more then 1 yr ago its unlimited supps but now I think maybe 10 or something….

As far as travel insurance….YES u DO NOT need to pay for the airfare with the card, this is platinum charge not credit card it on a different level. For gold or platinum credit u only get free travel insurance if you're the main card holder.

  • yes this is the only amex charge card that you dont need to pay the airfare with the card to be covered with travel insurance. has anyone tried this sign up get the points book the airfare and cancel the card within 1-2 and ask for the annual to be reversed thus u get a free flight? maybe there are conditions and its hard if you have to wait up to 8 weeks to get the points like most amex deals?

    • ANZ Platinum is next best where you only need to pay $250 towards travel

  • I've already got another Amex card when I applied for this, at no stage that my payroll company was contacted…then again I've paid on time every month with the other card and burnt quite a lot of dollars ;-)

Don't forget, you even get the Platinum Reserve card ($395 worth) for free that includes a return trip to as far as SYD-PER or SYD-AKL. The way I see it, 75k points purchased for $900 plus the free travel insurance and the free return domestic or NZ flight. Worth a fair bit IMHO.

  • Can someone tell me if it's worth getting this if I spend about $10-15k per year on the card on an ongoing basis?
I would guess not but just wanted to see what others thought. $900 a year is a LOT but the initial value of the deal is great.

    • no its not worth it unless you are a high spender. you are better offer getting the bmw amex or bluesky card.

      • is the bluesky card still offered by amex? i checked its website last week trying to see the benefit of bluesky (i have one, but dont remember what it is really offers), didnt find it.

        • no it doesnt look like the bluesky card is still offered by amex. if you have one u are lucky it has free travel insurance etc. just click on the left column when you log in your account to find out the benefits or call amex.

    • Get a fee free card or one with a low <$100 fee like the Everyday rewards card. $89 pa and with 16 000 points to start you off. 1:1 QFF transfers too, all uncapped.

  • Is the 75000 reward point once off?

  • +1

It will not be worth it, if you only spend 1K to 2K a month…the annual fee would be too much…..personally, anything over 80K a year is worth it….coz of the points….u earn more then 2 tickets return to asia countries.

And remember this is a charge card, u have to pay the amount in full EVERY MONTH!!!!

    • I'm just wondering, isn't it easier to collect points with the platinum edge? Cause it's got the 3-2-1 rewards program?

  • Just want to add my 2 cents. Not sure if its still on. But two weeks ago The Amex Platinum Edge had a $200 Ticketmaster gift card (once off). And a return flight (domestic)each year. Only $150 annual fee i think this is a much better deal.

P.s And the Card looks fuc#$#@ nice =D

  • Yes…the Platinum Credit Cards has better deal or same then Charge Cards for sure…..but getting a charge card is more then just a credit card…is like driving a toyota and a BMW…so is up to you…

  • "Enjoy a complement, with our compliments -get the privileges of a complimentary Platinum Reserve Credit Card with your membership, including a complimentary economy return flight16 to 7 international and 37 domestic destinations or an overnight hotel stay17 - every year."

So one free economy return flight every year ?
