Got Reeled in on a Hyundai Santa Fe Today - $36,990 drive away

So having spent the last Year and a half mulling over and researching a replacement for our family car, I've just pulled the trigger on a new 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Active X MY18 (DM5 series 2). I've never bought a new car before so i'm equal parts remorseful and excited. I'd love to hear your thoughts though on whether I have made a mistake or have got a good deal to tip the scales either way so I can just feel one of these emotions!

The fact our 2nd child is arriving in a matter of weeks may have been a key factor, but I also felt like we were getting a good deal for $36,990 drive away + mats + tints + full tank of fuel. I'm literally just waiting on a call from the finance team to take my deposit….

Initially we had been trying to keep the budget down to mid 20s and had started off looking at a 5 seat SUV but after looking at various cars (Sportage / CX5 / Tucson) we felt that we would be losing well-used boot space over our current Sedan and the extra 2 seats would be a helpful option to have as we are expecting some overseas visitors intermittently to see the new baby…

Whilst a good option on paper, we weren't too keen on the CX9 and generally the cars we were finding in our budget and wish lists were at least 6-8 Years old. They also seemed to be pushing the mid to high 20s for a good one with options we wanted = leather seats / reversing camera, and low mileage (i.e under or around 80Ks). Then this car popped up and i've talk myself up into spending more money because it's new and comes with warranty, capped price servicing and has lots of additional safetly features (smart cruise control, lane assist, assisted braking)…

If it was on me we would be driving a 6 year old vovlo xc90, but my partner was not a fan at all! She tends to be right most of the time though as I've learnt over the Years…….!

If they're anything like the ASX then build quality is atrocious, as is the stereo, the CVT and everything else.

      • +9

Because I hate their 'living out the back of the car' jingle so much, this was never a viable option for me.

        • +1

less aggravating than driving a Mitsi………

    • +2

2wd, manual & 5 seats at that price.

    congrats mate,

you'll love it, welcome to the Hyundai family

you don't need affirmation whether you have had a good deal as long as you like what you bought.

different people will have different expectations of what the car will do for them, and what they see value in.

    • thank-you. I've read a lot of generally positive things about the Santa Fe that I am happy with my purchase.

I would have loved to have bought the Skoda Kodiaq - i really enjoyed the test drive, but there was no way I was going to talk myself into spending another $10Kish.

      • We have a Santa Fe too - I love driving it. I wasn't involved in purchasing so no idea what was paid for ours.

        • Good to here. Seemed to be a good balance between size and function for us. Not the most exciting car in the world and I'll be stressed when we inevitably give it it's first ding/scratch, but until then we will enjoy!

  • +17

I'd love to hear your thoughts though on whether I have made a mistake

Never ask this after you have bought something, just enjoy it.

    • ha - true. Scrap the mistake bit and please just tell me i've done good.

    Why dont U get RAV4

    • +1

I'm sure it's a lovely car, but it's not for me. A quick look on carsales also seems to point to the SF I just bought giving me a bit extra value/extras in comparison.

      • Short term sure but the Toyota will last to 3-400,000 at least, you'll struggle to get that with the Hyundai. The build quality has improv ed in the last 10 years, but you still don't see them on the road for that long a time.
Enjoy the new car, but I'll be impressed if the services aren't $$$ and killing the value by the 10 year mark. But then, just buy another one at that point.

          "WHY CHOOSE HYUNDAI SERVICING"
As you drive away in your brand new Hyundai, you’re instantly eligible for Australia’s most comprehensive, fully transferable Lifetime Service Plan.

I have a document which breaks down the service plan up to 510KM - seems reasonable to me. Can't comment on other manufacturers.

Like you say though, I don't think i'll still be the owner beyound 3 years, but this transferable service plan feels like a good feature to help with the re-sell.

  • +7

I wouldn't have paid any more than $36,989

  • tank of fuel = $80 = 0.2% bonus - not really ozbargainworthy

    • :( I'll make sure I turn up with some jerry cans and try and up the %.

  • +4

You should of (it should be have but I thought I'd stay in character) bought a second hand car and saved yourself a whole lot of depreciation.

I don't actually think that but I thought I'd do the "in before someone else" thing.

Enjoy the new car. Nothing beats being the first to pass gas into new cushions.

    • +1

My gf's dad only buys new cars and then drives them for 20+ years. He's not too worried about depreciation haha.

      • +3

So do I but it's mainly for the farts in the cushion thing.

    • +1

Ha - i may have already done that on the test drive…..

Yes - The plan was to buy second hand (praise be the barefoot investor) and I was steering towards a Volvo - but with a pregnant partner losing patience with me - in this instance - it was the lesser of two evils.

Thank you for your kind words though tshow!

    • +1

Theres a lot to be said for the safety features on the new models coming out. I'm really loving radar cruise control in my work car :)

    • Actually, passing gas into the seat cushions is one of the items on the dealer delivery checklist.

  • +2

Congrats on your new car, always an exciting time!

Just to make you aware, and you should be fine, Hyundai America have just recently (~3 days ago?) recalled "12,574 Santa Fe SUVs built in South Korea from June 15, 2017, through Dec. 28, 2017" due to a steering wheel issue. There's nothing I've seen to indicate any RHD models are affected, but may be worth just keeping an eye out.

    • Thank you beeawwb - that's really helpful to know!

  • +2

Have you paid in full yet? Hyundai often have great sponsorship deals where you can get $1k back if you are a member of a particular sporting club (membership might cost $250 but u get $1k back..) not sure of these deals are up and running right now but we used it last year (Carlton afl membership)

    • No - not yet. I've only just put the $1K deposit down. The finance manager is trying his best to get me to sign up to 'an unbelievable deal' at the moment! Will explore now to see if there are any sponsorship deals and report back to help any other ozbargainers!

      • Carlton had $1k back (separate to any deal the dealer could do or even factor in) so was on top of whatever deal U negotiated and think a few a-league clubs and one or two nrl have lesser value deals
        GL op

        • All of the A League clubs have the cash back (it’s called the ‘Hyundai’ A League!)

          Recommend you double check t&cs
          http://www.hyundai.com.au/why-hyundai/sponsorships/carlton-f…

We bought a membership the same day we put down deposit and then had the membership by the date we finalized the purchase a month or so later. Not sure what they count as purchase date

Think membership was like $240, if you go for this deal make sure you get the right grade of membership, but yeh likely the a-league clubs have offers if that sport is more your thing but not sure if other cash back offers are for $1k

        • +1

just signed up for membership for the Brisbane Lions Womens AFL Team at $60. Read through the Ts and Cs a number of times to check on timings of becoming a member and the car purchase and the only doubt I have is whether I would be able to claim this offer on top of any finance offer I potentially take with them. If this works though I will owe you a beer original15! As you will have saved me $940!

        • @barbienewb:
Can you paste the link for the t&cs? I would be very surprised if an aflw membership was enough forthe cashback but good luck
Most of the AFL memberships require the purchase of an 11 game membership to qualify

        • +1

          @original15:

Sure - as below. Annoyingly they don't have the correct Ts and Cs on the page itself (https://www.hyundai.com.au/why-hyundai/sponsorships/brisbane…). It's only by getting to the redeem page do you get to see the below.

I did wonder on the ALFW membership - but the image they use on the page is of the Women's team, so would be a bit misleading if that's not the case. Anyway, would love to see if i've interpreted things incorrectly. I guess the only part i'm concerned about is 'full ticketed member' - which I can't seem to match on the Brisbane Lions page in terms of language

          1. Full-ticketed members of Brisbane Lions (Affiliate) are eligible to claim a $500, $1000, or $2000 (Redemption Offer) Hyundai Motor Company Australia (Hyundai) for vehicles which are purchased in their own/joint name during the Promotional Period.

          3. The offer applies to private buyers only. ABN holders, fleet buyers, government authorities and agencies or persons acquiring vehicles for business or commercial purposes are excluded from the offer

          4. The offer may not be combined with any other offer or promotions extended by Hyundai and is not transferable to any other person. The offer can only be redeemed once per vehicle purchase i.e membership of a sporting club or any other agency, body or company for which Hyundai may make a similar offer will not entitle the Affiliate to more than Redemption Offer for the same vehicle purchase

          5. Hyundai will not be responsible for any redemption claims that are lost during transmission, or are illegible when received by Hyundai. Incomprehensible and illegible redemption claims and accompanying documents will be deemed invalid and the Affiliate will be notified

          6. The redemption claim must be received by Hyundai within 3 months of the date of purchase of the vehicle. Hyundai will not accept any claims or pay any Redemption Offer if the redemption claim is received by Hyundai greater than 3 months after the date of purchase of the vehicle.

          8. Upon verification of identity, confirmation of vehicle purchase, validation of Brisbane Lions Membership and registration of vehicle in claimant's name, Hyundai will process the redemption claim and send the Affiliate a cheque for the amount of the Redemption Offer

          11. 12. Hyundai reserves the right to reject any claims if Hyundai has reasonable grounds to suspect that the claimant has tampered with the claims process, a claimant submits a claim that is not in accordance with these Terms and Conditions or the claimant has, in the reasonable opinion of Hyundai engaged in conduct in making the claim which is fraudulent, misleading, deceptive or generally damaging to the goodwill or reputation of Hyundai.

          13. The Redemption Offer of the legal or beneficial interest in the Redemption Offer cannot be transferred or assigned and cannot be redeemed for anything other than payment by cheque made payable by Hyundai to the Affiliate which can take up to 8 weeks to process and deliver.

          14. Hyundai reserves the right in its sole and absolute discretion and at anytime (including during the Promotional Period) to cancel, suspend, terminate amend or modify this offer and these terms and conditions in anyway (including but not limited to changing the eligible vehicles and the amount of the applicate Redemption Offer).

        • @barbienewb:
Thanks for pasting, interesting. I would be thinking it’s only for the men’s team given difference in $$ for the two memberships. Surely someone you can check with/call

        • @original15:

I rang the Hyundai head office this morning to clarify and will report back. I also enquired as to whether this offer can be used in conjunction with a finance offer taken out with them. I'm assuming it will be a no to both.

        • @barbienewb:
          Did you hear back?

  • 37k for a highlander. Nice work

    • Not a highlander - active x. Preference was to not get diesel. 37K for a highlander would have been an extremely good deal!

      • +1

Hahahah oops. Still not a bad deal. We got the sportage instead of Hyundai. Super close between the two, but went with kia for the warranty (for what its worth).

        Safe and happy driving!

        • If you intend to keep Kia for life then diffenert story, everything come out after 7 years.

  • If you’d bought a Great Wall or Haval I’d guess the responses would have been quite different!

Hyundai make good cars. You might have got a better deal, but over the life of the vehicle it wouldnt be a lot extra.

    • Yea - I suppose I was interested to see how much better I could have achieved on this car is all.

  • Does it have multiple eneloop holders?

    • 3 + a flux capacitor

  • +1

Great car. We got one a few years back.

    • thanks michaelf! which variant have you got? Interested to see how I get on with the fuel consumption of this V6…

  • Congrats and yes, whenever you buy a car, there's always a mixture of excitement and doubts (did I choose the right car, get the best deal, etc). The salesman probably didn't volunteer this info but there's a new Santa Fe coming soon so there will be run out deals that could bring even cheaper pricing and your recently purchased car will depreciate even faster as people then wants the latest model which is "better" looking, better, with new features. It could be pricier too though. Sorry but I don't know how to add a website link in my reply but Google it or there's already a review on www.carguide.com.au.

  • full tank of fuel

I feel like this is a given, I wouldn't be accepting the keys to a brand new car that didn't have a full tank.

    • +2

No. I just brought a new car assuming the same but got 1/4 fuel. Not a biggie but annoyed at myself for not asking. Dealers job is to screw you so don't assume anything. Always confirm.

      • Yea - this was my concern too! Don't have it in writing yet either OR the mats they will give me…and i'd prefer not to have the rubber ones…

  • +2

Just enjoy the car and the 5 year Hyundai Warranty. Its not very often you buy a big ticket item so enjoy the experience. There will be plenty of Eddie the experts on this thread who will try and sour your decision as you will have discovered from your post here .Many have very fixed opinions on what they consider a good deal or a good car.Read my car purchase post , I got hammered.
Your car your money your decision, and a better decision than a 6 year old car which will become a money pit.
With this car you can budget your motoring costs, as there are no unexpected service or mechanical breakdown costs, and damn it feels good to have a new car in the driveway.

    • Thanks Klevakiwi and best of your luck with your purchase too!

  • +4

Just enjoy it. NEVER ask questions after pulling the trigger.

  • +1

Hi barbienewb - I like the deal you got. I chatted a Hyundai dealer in Sydney and he can't match it.
What dealer did you use? Also did you get the Brisbane Lions cashback? Cheers
