[Discussion] Selling Moon Title Deeds on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MOON-LAND-TITLE-DEEDS-MOON-4-SALE-FRE…

Yeah It's a scam but the fact is 100% positive feedback.

<Quote> Massive Savings for eBay customers - our usual RRP is $69.99USD. </Quote>

How can people be so stupid. I mean even if you know its a novelty item, you can forge such sort of things yourself and frame it. And I'm pretty sure the proceeds do not go to the Steve Irwin Wildlife Warriors!

  • kinda reminds me of the name a star after yourself scam

  • Apart from being a scam, it breaks ebay listing policy

    http://help.ebay.com.au/Help/Policies/Selling_-_listings/HTM…

NOT PERMITTED: HTML or JavaScript that automatically overwrites any area on the listing outside of the item description area

So, if you were malicious, you could report it for that :-)

Some of the TOS are funny / out of date too:

"Negative feedback will be left for non-paying bidders and the goods will be re-listed for sale." = LOL

"I am not responsible for your parcel once it has been put in the mail. I cannot give refunds for lost or damaged items as it is in the care of Australia Post after it leaves me" = DOUBLE LOL

    • What part of the page is overwritten?

  • This product is offered for sale as a novelty item/gift. We are not associated with any other company. Your bidding/purchase signifies your understanding and acceptance of this. Each Certificate of Title has a unique registration number that serves as your guarantee of authenticity.

This means that this item does not have any legal rights to the land, it is clearly just another novelty item and a great gift idea. So tell me, how is this a scam?

"When you look closely at the documents you receive after your purchase you will see the words “This is a novelty gift”. This statement is used in two contexts. The first as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as “the quality of being novel”, “something new and unusual”, and “a small mass produced article”. The second context is out of the original land owners personal paranoia. At the advice of his legal representative they suggested the use of the phrase “novelty gift” to avoid any frivolous law suits from foreign governments. This does not diminish the value of the property you are purchasing. The bottom line is that you own the property after the sale"

So, it's stated elsewhere in the listing that it is ALSO a parcel of land.

      • "Novelty" - the quality of being novel! WTF?

      • good point, I didn't read all the text, I just read the start and end.

    • Its a scam because it doesnt clearly show that its a fake. These sort of things should say "novelty" in the title.

The ACCC apparently takes a dim view of hiding important details in large amounts of text..

      • The "large" amount of text you are referring to is a 283 character disclaimer. 283 characters is hardly large.

        • There are 3400 words in the entire ebay ad - which is wayy to much for a piece of paper. this wooden "beer drinker of the year" award is only 200 words.

        • Yes but with something like this, wouldn't you read the disclaimers even if you skip the rest of the text?

        • depends how smart i was. Also its worded in a way that sentences contracdict the fact its a fake.

Is the seller purposely trying to make me claw out my eyes? Yellow background with red text, seriously?
