Heat Pump or Condenser Dryer

Hi Ozbargain,

I’m in the market for a new clothes dryer. It’ll be used in a small apartment laundry hence I’m hoping for either a heat pump dryer, or if cheap enough to offset the increase in power bills over the next 5 years or so, a condenser dryer. Unfortunately the old school cheap vented dryers just won’t work for the space.

I’ve had a bit of a look around stores in my area, as well as online, but there doesn’t seem to be much around that isn’t super high end (European brands etc).

Budget is sub $1000, but obviously the cheaper the better!

Thanks in advance.

  • Budget is sub $1000

Then buy a decent condenser dryer, rather than a cheap and nasty heat pump in that price range.

The only plus for heat pump over the condenser dryer is reduced running costs, but thats offset by longer drying times.

  • I bought recently a F+P heatpump dryer.
I'm happy with it. It was … $1254 delivered from 2nds world - a "new" one.
    DH8060P1 is the model number.

I don't find that it particularly takes longer than a normal plain dryer does to take clothes.
I find that the fuller it is, the faster it dries - to a point.
    it's very quiet.
It's UI is simple and plumbing its water outport to the drain was easy as there was already a hole for one.

It does heat up the laundry a little bit, but not much.

Im a happy heat pump user.

  • Do the math on what you would be wasting in electricity by not committing to a decent heat pump dryer. You'll find that there is a break even point as heat pump dryers are extremely efficient..

Last time I did the math the break even point was about 8 years (heat pump dryer + 8 years = condenser dryer + 8 years). After this point you are saving money.

This will obviously depend on personal circumstances and electricity prices.
