How to get long layover flight?

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are looking to travel to Barcelona later this year, we want to stop in Dubai to explore for few days. I know qantas route for that is from Sydney > Dubai > Barcelona.

How can we get few days of transit or layover without paying for multi stop? if we add multi stop, prices goes up quite a bit.

And if someone could please tell me how long can you get a layover for free? 2 days, 4 days or 10 days etc.

Thank you!

  • Dubai is Emirates' hub. Just search for "Emirates Dubai stopover".

Qantas only fly to London. The arabs fly beyond Dubai to Europe, but do you really want to fly an arab airline, when they have links to terrorism. Not me.

  • I just did a test run on Emirates website on a couple of different dates, the price difference is very small, less than $50 each time I tested. Tried with about 3 or 4 days layover at Dubai.

  • Double airport tax, got a pay more, wish there was a way.

    Look at airwander.com

A few years ago I did Amsterdam > Dubai > 6 days Dubai and Dubai > Adelaide on two separate bookings and it didn't cost extra.

    Or the two flights

    Syd - dub return

Dub - bar return (inside dates of first flight)

  • Multi city booking, option for it on Expedia.

  • Carry some headphones for a mystery man.

It can be as long as you like, BUT a layover will comes with no luggage. Just your carry on.

    :/

You do understand why though right?

    • Not true.

You can ask to be checked in only until a certain point in your flight.

Pickup your luggage there, then check in for the rest of the flight when you're there.

      • Never heard of it. Luggage is always been checked through to the 'end' of that 'flight booking'.

How does one 'check in' luggage in the middle of the flight then? When you already have a boarding pass etc for the remaining leg, so no need to checkin.

I think the problem is OP used layover when what was wanted was a stopover.

@greenpossum: Ummm yeah…. You didn't read the question then did you?

How can we get few days of transit or layover without paying for multi stop?

OP is too cheap to pay for a STOPOVER. So…. If they do a LOOOONG layover, they won't have luggage.

        • Say I am going from Melbourne to Bangkok via Singapore.

When I check-in in Melbourne, I ask to only check me in and tag my bags to Singapore.
Pick up the bags in Singapore, and leave the airport as normal.

Go back to airport, go to the check-in desk, and check in, drop off the bags and tag the bags to Bangkok…

Just like if it was two separate bookings, you just have to ask in Melbourne to check-in and tag to Singapore instead of final destination.

I do this frequently as I often take things to our Singapore office that I cant carry on.
So I pickup my bags, get the stuff out, walk over to the desk, and check in the bags.
Head to the office in the city, drop off the stuff, have lunch, meeting or two, head to airport and get hammered in the lounge for free.

        • @Drew22: That sounds like a multi stop booking and not a layover. They are different things.

        • @JimmyF:

It's a layover. I used to do it once a month w/ 7 hour layover.

        • @JimmyF: I'm just pointing out that what the OP is describing is commonly called a stopover, luggage or not, because they want to have a look around. A layover is where you don't leave the transit area. But OP doesn't know that.

Also you're assuming they don't want their luggage for several days. That may or may not be true.

        • @greenpossum: I'm pretty sure the OP knows this, they just don't want to pay for a stop over. As they said

          without paying for multi stop?

Basically, they want something for nothing!

        • @JimmyF: OP may sound hard-line but every OzBargainer has a yield point.

  • Most airlines allow layovers of less than 24hrs for free. Sometimes it's difficult to book that on their website since most people want a quick transit. A travel agent should be able to do it.

Don't forget to book two separate rooms.
