90,000 points, $400 travel credit. What's the cheapest way for me to travel to Hawaii in October?

The cheapest return I could find was with Jetstar from the 15th til the 20th (dates slightly flexible) for ~$630, but I have $400 travel credit with my Explorer AMEX and about 90,000 points. Unfortunately everything I find through Amex is over $1000, meaning my $400 travel credit would be redundant to spend here cos I'll spend just as much on top.

I'm willing to spend my Amex points but don't know if it's better to just convert them to another service.

Has anyone got any tips?

  • October is when world triathlon ironman championships are on in Kona, so some flights esp early Oct will alerady be heavily booked.
(many people book this in NOv every year)

You didn't say where you wish to fly from ?

Fiji Airways via Fiji almost always cheapest.

You can fly from Bris, SYd, Mel or Adl nonstop to FIji with FIji air.

They have 3 flights a week FIji to Honolulu(all 737's I think), one is nonstop, other 2 direct(Same aircraft). One is via Samoa & other via Xmas IS (not the one in the Indian ocean)

Added bonus is you can have a stopover in fabulous Fiji.

    • Sorry, I'm flying from Sydney!

This is really useful info, however Im specifically looking for HOW to book given my amex travel credit + points. What method will be the most efficient?

      • Check your AMEX travel credit usage terms - mine can only be redeemed on QF (Qantas) not Jetstar flights.

      • get onto Amex or an amex affiliated travel agent, who should be able to book Fiji Air. No agent likes Junkstar as they don't pay them much or any commission & can be very hard to deal with.

  • just flew jetstar - really hope your not a large person (ie shorter then 172cm and about 75kgs and less)…the seats are unbelievably narrow (IMO narrower then Jetstar domestic, except its a 10.5hr flight on the way back). We vowed we wouldnt fly jetstar to hawaii again as its too confined for such a distance.

Convert your Amex points to virgin and fly with Hawaiian Airlines at least one way (42K pts needed and you will only get 4:3 for your Amex pts) award seats showing available atm. See if you can sell your amex travel credit on here or use it towards the flight home.

    • I saw this! Unfortunately I need to be there before the 18th and none of the sale dates work for me
