Replacing Old Custom Number Plates

Hi everyone,

I'm sure someone has had this experience, but basically my car was in a bad accident yesterday and chances are it will be written off.

Now, I had old plates (from 2000 Olympics) on there as shown here

I tried ordering a replacement from the RMS website, but it's just showing the normal yellow plates.

Is there any chance I can still get these replaced?

Thanks.

  • Can I just ask (out of curiosity) why you would choose the Olympic special plates?

Do you just like the look? Or do you have a connection with those Olympics? Or are you just patriotic? Or none of the above?

    Sorry, I can't help

Not sure, I guess when my parents bought the plates they thought it looked nice. Back then everyone had the nasty yellow plates… Plus it was a one-off cost (compared to the yearly fee in NSW) so they got it.

Nowadays it's just unique, so if I could get them replaced I wouldn't mind.

  • Can you pinch the old plates (if not damaged) and transfer them to the new car?

I think the one on the front got f!@#ed up lol

  • Actually nevermind, RMS says that you cannot replace number plates that have been destroyed as you need to hand in the old ones.

    Thanks :)

    • Surely that isn't entirely true (probably open to interpretation)

I had a motorcycle accident. The bike went to the wreckers and I just took the plates. I'm not paying for them anymore - it's all deregistered.

What if the plates get lost/stolen during the accident. Surely they can't expect you to surrender them in that case?

    • Doubt anyone would notice if you beated it flat and attached it to a new car

      • Hahaha I'll keep that in mind (if I even see the plates again before it goes to the wreckers).

Just go to the wreckers yard and get them.

  • They were limited edition platses. If you have the damaged plate you should be able to get the same letter/no combo reissued, but it will be the current standard format, or a fancy format you pay extra for.

    • Thank you for confirming :)

  • The Olympic spirit is dead at rms
My grand parents wanted re-issued bicentennial premier state plates due to fading but they dont make them anymore so instead the oldies are driving around with faded plates instead.

Just get your old plates even if they are bent.

    • Will try! Thanks :)

  • The other thing you could do is scour the classifieds for cars that have the plates on them and ring the owner and ask if they are willing to sell just the plates to you. Sure, they won’t be the same lettering, but they will be “Olympic” plates.

I have done this before when I saw a car with personal plates that suited me but were just regular plates to the owner. I said I would pay for all the transfers and get new plates for them and threw in $100 on top and they were happy to sell/swap just the plates.

    • That sounds to be a reasonable solution, but would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
