AMD MINI ITX build ryzen 1200?

Hey fellow ozbargainers.

I am going to build a Mini ITX build, using some of the items I have now, with the goal to eventually be a monster 4k Eating machine.

My question are:
Is it silly to only put a Ryzen 1200 in it for now and upgrade to a 1800 ryzen 2/3 (or 4) down the track when 4k gaming becomes more affordable? (while they still support AM4 chipset)
Are there issues OClocking on Mini ITX mobos?

Ill make it clear, I already have mid range computer parts but my full sized tower is an eye sore and while GPU prices are very high I want to make a smaller future up gradable ryzen build and looking at performance reviews, 1200 doesnt make much difference below 1440P. The alternative is 1600 but im worried 1600 will still throttle my GPU down the track at 4k gaming and I will have to upgrade anyway.

  • i thought the 2200g apu is the sweet spot at $99

    • That's $135 here.

  • Depends when you're planning to upgrade. No guarantee that new AMD cpus will support the motherboard you have/going to buy.

  • Only issue with overclocking is cooling so make sure you can get a decent AIO in there.

Not silly imo as you should be able to upgrade to Ryzen 2700 or something at a later time since they are supporting AM4 till 2020.
But Ryzen 2200g i think is better than Ryzen 1200 unless you already own the 1200 then go with that and a small OC.

    • The 1200 is an insane overclocker on air cooling alone. People are reporting stable 4.2ghz on water cooling. I managed to get 3.9 myself with an additional cooler.

  • The good thing with the 1200 is you can OC it to 3.6ghz on air cooling. It shat out on me at 3.7ghz but managed to get it stable at 3.9ghz with a bigger cooler. For the most part, this will be all you need unless you want 6 cores. In which case, go for the 1600. You can buy a low profile 1060 as well to compliment it.

  • I'd be targeting a Ryzen 5 2400G APU rather than a 1200. Then down the line aim at a Zen2 based CPU with a GPU (when the prices come down to a sane level).

    • Why is that?

I already have a GPU, really the only thing im replacing is my oversized Case, and the intel MB and CPU.

      • Ryzen 3 1200 is 4 cores / 4 threads spread over the 2 CCXs and 3.1Ghz

        Ryzen 5 2400G is 4 cores / 8 threads, all on 1 CCX, and 3.6Ghz

Upshot is more performance, Precision Boost 2, and the Vega 11 is non too shabby either.

Not sure what GPU you have, but the Vega 11 might be enough for you without the existing GPU.

        • Fair enough.

          Just had a look though.
Just using the ebay 20% sale as an example the 2400 is close to the 1600 price. Its a bit more expensive than the 1200.

          Ryzen 2400G $220
          Ryzen 1200 $143
          Ryzen 1600 $238.40

So not sure its worth it, as I was planning on upgrading later and going the budget option now

Edit, and my GPU beats the Vega 11 performance
