Problem on Porting out and in to Telstra

Hello,

I have a problem to port out and in my Telstra number. Here is what I have done so far:

  1. Purchased a $2 Optus prepaid SIM card

  2. Ported out my Telstra prepaid number to Optus by Optus live chat operator

  3. Received a SMS from Optus stating that my service is active

  4. Porting back the number to Telstra prepaid but getting stuck and talked to the live chat operator.
She adviced me the number is still with Telstra

  5. Just went to an Optus store and explaining to a staff I want to port out the number to Telstra and mentioned the number is active with Optus. But when she checked in their system, my number does not exist.

I don't understand what I get wrong. Could anyone help me on this please?

Thanks

  • How quick have you done this? It might take a while for everything to update properly? Is this a few days in between as it may still be porting over to Optus?

    • Porting to Optus was done yesterday and I tried to port the number back to Telstra this morning.

I thought when I receive the SMS from Optus saying the service is active then I can port it back to Telstra straight away, am I right?

Or am I doing it too rush?

      Thanks

I always put the new SIM in a spare phone just to make sure it ported.

      • did you show the SMS to Optus staff?

Never port to Optus. They have constant activation problems. Port to voda instead.

    • Just Optus or including the resellers (Amaysim etc)?

Porting is not as simple as you seem to think it is. Have a read of https://www.acma.gov.au/-/media/Networks/Information/pdf/c57… if you don't believe me.

TL;DR It can take a few days to "complete" a port beyond just your new SIM saying it's active. Give it time and try again.

If you are trying to port out and in to take advantage of some Telstra offer only available to "new" customers, they will eventually find out and claw back any discount, cashback, credit as you are not a new customer at all. You're wasting your time if that's the case.

    • Thank you for your advice. Let me give it a bit of time first and see what to do next

  • Telstra uses Siebel software for their connections etc and so does Vodafone.
A recent update that went through on 20th Feb allowed teleco’s to recognise a number that had ported out within the last 30 or 60 Days.
This allows companies like voda and Telstra to prevent “number spinning” for exiting customers to get “new connection” or “port in” deals.
My mate who works at Optus said they and virgin are implementing a similar system in the coming months.
I think the days of porting our and back in again for offers are numbered.

    • I bet they will botch the implementation and hurt innocents.

      • I guess it would be very difficult to enforce it on the sim sluts and their starter packs?
