Supermarket Meat Spoiled before Use by Date

Hi all,

We have repeatedly gone to use fresh meat purchased from Coles and Woolies well before the use by date only to find that they are not safe to eat and obviously spoiled (I'll spare you the descriptors).

Initially we thought it may be our fridge so we tried a second fridge with the same results. If it was an infrequent event I wouldn't really be concerned however it is now a regular occurrence. Having a large family we try to shop once a week and plan our meals. We have taken products back to the store on occasion but due to a busy household this is not always possible.

Just curious as to whether anyone has experienced similar?

Yep - I've noticed that meat from supermarkets spoil really fast whereas meat I get from the butcher can be left in the fridge for awhile with no worries.

  • my bread grow molds in 3 days as opposed to the Best Before date with another 3 days to go.

it was full of water/condensation when they stock it on the shelf every morning

Make sure you don't put bread in the fridge. Either leave it out (and sealed) or in the freezer. The more moist the climate (e.g. QLD) the faster mold grows. Never had an issue in Melbourne.

      • yea, i always leave it out with clip sealed,
and i find it helps, if i cramped the bread loaf to take out as much air as possible, but then the texture gone weird after that.

the coles guy said they were delivered in refrigerated truck hence the water condensation on every loaf

Really? On hot humid days we tend to put the bread in the fridge. If we leave it out that's when we get mold.

Bread in the fridge tends to get stale at a faster rate than at room temperature. So I guess if room temperature bread is getting moldy and fridge bread is going stale, probably best to put in the freezer and reheat in toaster/toaster oven. That's what we tend to do. Long explanation.

          Awesome! Thanks for the link.

I guess I'l keep the bread out of the fridge from now on.

        • @SpottyMoose: try woollies baked bread (not the Homebrand version, the stuff they bake in-store). I'm in a household of 2 people and my bread never goes mouldy except when I start a new loaf when the crusts are still left of the old one and don't eat them. Not sure how many days it takes to eat a loaf but at least a week I think.

on the meat side, did you portion it out and put them in freezer ? then thaw it when needed ?

We have a relatively large family and we try buy in bulk, freeze and then thaw what is needed during the day/overnight.
Try go to a local butcher, build up a relationship and they may even throw in a few extras like mine does from time to time.

    • Meat loses alot of flavor once frozen, not to mention it changes texture.

    • I hate thawed meat, I always manage to accidentally cook it slightly with the microwave which is disgusting. So I go shopping 2-3 times per week and buy maximum of 3 dinners worth each time

  • I don't buy meat from a supermarket unless I really need it. The markets are just as cheap, if not cheaper, and the meat isn't prepackaged into plastic containers.

  • I've not had meat go bad, but I do find use by dates at Supermarkets really short.

We don't have a "full range" butcher near us anymore (the shopping centre we go to only has a butcher selling poultry, which we do buy from sometimes, and none of the local shops near home or work are butchers).

We also go supermarket shopping only once a week and have to have that meat in the first half of the week's meals and eat "fresh meat" free meals for the remainder of the week.

    What is your refrigerator’s temperature?

  • never buy meat at supermarket to store, even if it is just a week.

  • Not meat but a few times when we haven't finished out milk it's been off a few days before the BB date
