What's Your View on Medical Wearable Device Designer Career (Therapeutical/Enhancement)

I am a podiatrist for 2 years now. Prior to it,I was a medical scientist in a pathology lab for nearly 14 years. Recently, with the influence of Elon Musk, I feel like I should do something more innovative and exciting. Life is too short. Luckily, I have received an offer in a Uni to do a degree of Masters of design. I am thinking to have a Medical Wearable Device Designer Career (Therapeutical/Enhancement)

However, 34 years old age and newly engaged status (no kids yet but not far off) put me off a little bit. Because as a man, I feel like I should support my family. Obviously, Study will sacrifice the income. Also, people around me always say I already have two bachelor degrees, a master degrees on other field wouldnt add any value to me.

So, Now,Would you dive into a further study if you are in my shoe and what's you view on the career path?

Why does it have to be OR? Study OR keep supporting your family?

Why can't it be AND? Study AND keep supporting your family?

Don't limit yourself to formal uni type study - it might be less valuable than short courses, talks, interviewing and connecting with various people, etc.

    • Thank you for the advice

Can you do your course part time?

34 is not that old in comparison to your working life retaining (at least another 30 years?) so if it’s going to be something you really enjoy I’d say do it now, it’d be way harder after having kids

    • Thank you

    Ask your fiancée.

  • Lot of shoulds in there, not many I want tos.

  • Why do you have to do a course at all? Can't you just wade into doing the actual thing and learn that way?

    • No really. But I want a proper systematic study. I think uni would be a good choice.

  • More innovative and exciting. Life is too short. Luckily, I have received an offer in a Uni to do a degree of Masters of design.

Waste of time. If you really want to do something innovative and exciting you would be doing it already, yesterday. A degree won't change anything.

  • Save your money. A design degree won't give you the upper hand. There should be plenty of free courses online (e.g Udemy) that will teach you design skills. If you're highly committed, motivated and disciplined, you'll learn the same set of skills in due time instead of needing to go to uni.

Do you have any friends/colleagues in the design field? One option is to partner with them to bring your idea to life. Two or more brains is better than one.

Because as a man, I feel like I should support my family. Obviously, Study will sacrifice the income.

What does your SO think? It's important to talk with her about what you plan to do.

    • She is sweet and fully supportive. No, I dont have friends in the design field at all, maybe should looking for one here, haha

      • Good to know! IMO you're better off self-studying design instead of going to uni unless you really want to work as a designer.

I think you should capitalise on work experience at the pathology lab. Are you able to contact your old boss? Perhaps he might have connections in the biomedical engineering field. Those people work on designing and building medical equipment.

  • Do you have a range of designs you are already working on, or solid ideas for wearable devices? If so, do it! If not, reconsider.

  • Fairly sure women feel they should support their family too.

Ie. have a conversation with your fiancée if she/he is prepared to be the main bread winner whilst you are studying.
