Cheap Laptop for R or Python?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy for a cheap laptop to study R and Python and has a long lifespan. Budget is ~700 or more but should be less than $1,000. I'm not sure about the specs that required to run these programs smoothly, so if any of you have any suggestions, please help

Thanks :)

Well you definetly won't be training any large models on it but if you just need it to run your IDEs and interpreter basically any modern laptop would do. Personally, for that price I would just grab one of these its 20% off with PRINT code right now. Although it's built quality isn't the best and you might want to upgrade to one of the SSD models, it gets you an 8th gen i5-8250u which are great and will be futureproof for a while. It's also thin and light which means you can take it with you anywhere, anyways this was just from a quick search on eBay, you can probably find something better for your needs with a little more effort.

Edit: on second thoughts for a little more money, an Inspiron 13 or Thinkpad might be more reliable, but I really prefer the form factor of the 320s and it's great for the money, again, it all depends on what you need

I'm learning python on this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/366470

Currently expired but it pops up every couple weeks or so.

    • Where are you learning python?

      • Udemy and Udacity.

    • thank you :)

  • If you don't need Windows, Metagear Alpha N850HJ-i5 might be a good option with i5-7300HQ / 8GB.

Selling at $977 + $32 to deliver to NSW (you can pick up if you're in Perth).

If you push it up to 16GB, you can do a lot more with R and Python. I would think that doing R and Python on Linux is better cause you may do your modeling on AWS / Azure / GCE, etc.
