Sydney to Melbourne Flight for Friday Afternoon

Hi

Does anyone know how to get a cheap flight "one way" from Sydney to Melbourne (Tulla)? I've just been using sky scanner and don't know where else to look. I went down there mid week (Wednesday afternoon) and paid around $100 however I need to go back down tomorrow afternoon and the flights are all touching $500. Naturally they would charge the weekend premium, but hoping somebody has a secret way to a better deal.

Cheers

There are one way flights on TigerAir from:
    SYD-MEL
    Departs: Friday 23 March 2018
    around $273

TT 251 or TT 253 or TT 259

    • Ask Jetstar to price beat these and it should come down to $245.70.

      https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/price-beat-guarantee

Edit: just realised this will only work for bookings at least 7 days in advance.

Better option is to fly on Saturday night or evening, or otherwise Sunday morning. Always much cheaper than Friday night.

Friday afternoon before the F1 … cheap flights are not your friend here. Even on my corporate travel site, Jetstar bookings at about $400.

    • I actually just found out about this a short while ago after posting. Such a bummer I need to fly down on the formula one weekend. That is pretty much it, and the chances of them dropping is next to nothing.

      • Yeah, they won't be dropping. The airlines have made their money this weekend and will be happy to flog the last remaining seats to folks who just have to travel and are prepared to fork out big time. With the F1 on you'll get no love all weekend.

I havent checked, but have you considered Avalon.

When I booked for a trip 4 weeks ago (trip was last week) Jetstar to Avalon was much cheaper (Daytime Flight) the bus from Avalon was supposed to be about 15 minutes longer, and a few dollars more.

The bus waited for all the passengers who had a ticket, to get their bags and loaded. (I would pre purchase your tickets online, so you are guarranteed a seat)

I found it more pleasant than going through Tullamarine (and cheaper)

We also did one way, so I cant offer opinion on the reverse flight advantage/disadvantage. But in future would fly down via Avalon and maybe back via Tullamarine (I have Qantas club access which isnt at Avalon)

    • Sydney - Avalon (One Way) actually costs more on this Friday afternoon.

      • Yea I looked as well since posting. Bummer

I'll try this idea next time as I will need to go back again. It actually doesn't sound too bad !

      • Depending how far you're willing to go to save some money, you could also consider Newcastle to Melbourne (Tullamarine). Jetstar has this route for $55 this Sunday. Plus the public transport to Newcastle airport from Sydney is cheaper ($8.55 on OPAL) than Avalon bus to Melbourne CBD ($22), although it will take much longer of course. Airport parking in Newcastle is probably wayyy cheaper than Sydney too.

  • Why did you buy a one way flight instead of a Flexi flight?

    • I actually didn't know about flexi flights, I'm assuming this is a two way ticket with the return journey that is flexible? I am uncertain when I'll return so the plan was to just go one way and deal with the return leg when I have to - I really don't fly often at all so it's all new to me.

      • Yep that’s exactly what a Flexi flight is.

Both ways are usually flexible. Buying 2 one way tickets is almost always more expensive. Try buying a return ticket to Sydney and see what comes up.

I just searched skyscanner. Cheapest I found was $150 on Jetstar departing at 6:15pm. That is a much better price than what everyone else here is quoting so perhaps the prices have dropped? If you want to fly a little earlier Tiger Air has a 2:40pm flight which is showing as $182 for me.

    • I checked Scyscanner also, then went to the airline website… At first I thought OPs cookies might now be in his favor. The airlines prices were much higher than Skyscanner…. Skyscanner hadn't caught up with them yet

  • Thanks for the ideas guys, I ended up just biting the bullet and booking the cheapest I can get at an uncomfortable time of arrival.

That sucks. It hurts to pay high prices when they changed so often.
Not everyone has the stomach for it, but
I checked the overnight bus for you…. it looks like there's no seats available.
I hope that something works out for you..

Oops, sorry, just saw your last post

  • i noted that you have bought your ticket.

could have taken the train or coach.

edit: seems like they are all booked out for this friday. didn't know they are this popular. you can get coach ticket for 7pm Saturday and arrive melbourne sunday morning. costs 70 dollars.

    • Probably only booked because of the Formula 1
