Got the W9 last time and they sound amazing. Gets crazy loud and maintains great sound while at it, even better than Sonos Play 5 IMO.

  • +1

Got the W7 last time as I missed out on the W9
Got the W9 now as I was so impressed with the W7
Going to run them both with the PlayFi app and see how they go together - one at each end of the yard when we next have a bbq

    • +2

I've got the w7 and w9 (actually 3 now thanks op). If your impressed with the w7, your gonna have a wtf moment when you crank up the w9!

      • Wonder how the sound bar is?
I already have the W9, I might get the sound bar plus one more W9 to have a 5.1 setup.
I think that will boom boom shake the room.

        • I will let you know when I have set mine up :) but the down side is that the offer will ends by that time.

        • @Bargain Zombies: I am on the fence. Maybe wait for the next eBay sale?

      • thx for the feedback … now I am excited … love wtf moments … the older I get the harder they are to have!

        • +1

I won't say much more and get your expectations too high. I'm sure you'll be happy though. I've set up two w9s in stereo pair in a small room and can't play it any louder than half volume. Fantastic detail in sound quality for a semi portable wireless system. Hope you do get that moment!

        • +1

So wadda ya think of the w9? Did you get that moment? Lol

        • @LGW: it def loud - and very clear - was hoping for a little more bass extension than it provides - the W7 is amazing for such a small speaker - anyhoo - I am a happy customer

        • +1

          @theprodjuicer:
Yes I love the clarity it produces. Try different positions in your room to maximise the bass, I've got mine around 10cm from the wall. Even a few cm back or forwards can make quite a difference. Oh wait did you mention you were gonna use it outside? Lol ummm time to build some portable wall panels me thinks. glad you like it :)

      • +1

        I've got a W7 and just ordered a W9. Can't wait for WTF moment :)

  • +1

If only they had an off switch!

  • +1

thinking about the sound bar, anyone got one?

    • +3

I was enthusiastic until I read no HDMI or bluetooth. I've read more than one review that mentions DTS Play-Fi sucks as well…
If all you want to do is connect it to your TV and control it with the remote or your phone then its awesome value.
I can't work out how I can control this thing with Google home or send Google play music to it wirelessly either…
Would love to hear if someone knows how?

      • With the discount, I am willing to compromise and hope for a firmware/software upgrade.

        • same here, just ordered! yolo

Before you buy the Soundbar and W7 or W9's as surrounds, I'd watch this first:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JQ5Y3BqJyQ

From my understanding of that video (Its early in the morning so forgive me if I'm wrong) it says that once you have setup your surrounds to be part of the system, you then have to delete that configuration from the app to be able to stream music again. WTF?? So does that mean you can never just set and forget your surround configuration because you have to delete it every time you want to listen to music? Which would mean recreating your surround config every time you wanted to watch a movie after music streaming?

Thats why this stuff is going cheap, amazing sound, stupid software and missing essential features like bluetooth and hdmi.

  • I own a Polk that uses DTS Play-Fi as well. I find the app usable.. Bought a W9 last night. Thanks for the post. I literally searched Def Tec the date before and they weren't available on Grays Ebay.

    • +1

      Hows the Polk? Any regrets?

      • No regrets. That’s why I am investing in W9 which is on the same platform. Buying this to replace my old B&W zeppelin. I hope the sound would be equivalent.

    • Is that the Polk SB1?

      • It’s Omni s6.

        • Ah that was on sale at JB Hi Fi. Was posted here as well.
Let us know if it is better than W9 or not.

        • @congngo: W9 blows all my previous speakers out of water. I have bought and sold all the major brands including B&O B&W Bose Sony Harmon Kardon Geneva and Polk. This is by far the best sound I have ever owned.
Such a bargain at this price. I shall receive my first Sonos Play 5 next week but I don’t expect it will beat W9.

        • @Ahan: wow that a lot of big brands there! Could I ask which models of which brand you have?
So I would avoid them in the future :)
Let us know how the W9 compared to Sonos.

  • +1

    Thank you OP.
I have bought the sound bar + 3x W9. 2 to complete the 5.1 system. The extra one for the kitchen :).
I am ready to have some headache to set this up :).

    • Let us know how it all sound :)

      • The W9 is too big for rear speakers. I will use it for something else. I have bought the W7 to replace this setup.

        • You have a lot of spare $$$ lying around.
They said the W9 can be used as rear speakers. Why do you say that it will be too loud?

        • @congngo: too big and looks award in a room.

  • Yes it's not Bluetooth, I beleive due to the inferior sound quality broadcast that way. I think you can get a Bluetooth receiver to plug in the back. Oh and a strong WiFi signal is also a must if your considering this as a wireless system in your home.

  • I currently have Bose Acoustimass 6 Series II (bought probably 15 years ago), paired with a Yamaha RX-V2065 and the speakers have served me fine since new (I love the small footprint). I've sort of been interested in an upgrade, but I haven't taken the time to go and listen to asnything yet.

Any thoughts on how these W9s and W7s might sound comparitively?

  • -1

pity theres no real way of getting 5.1 out of just a sound bar or somthing of simler size

    • “A slimmed-down version of the company’s flagship W Studio, the W Studio Micro is a 3.1-channel soundbar and wireless subwoofer that promises premium performance in a space-saving design. It’s compatible with the DTS Play-Fi multiroom streaming platform, and can be upgraded to a 5.1 system by adding a pair of Definitive Technology’s wireless surround speakers.”

  • +1

I’ve gotten the W7 from the previous deal and for its price I find it not as good as the Sonos Play One. It’s sound is not as crisp, and somewhat muddy on instrumental music and crowded soundtracks. That is to say difficult to seperate instruments and vocals respectively.

For those considering this, I would highly recommend listening to both it and the Sonos Play One before making your purchase.

  • Last one on ebay for W9

  • From the reviews, Definitive Technology W Studio seem to outperform the micro ultra-slim variant.
Wonder if they will have this in stock in future sales…?
May hold out for the larger brother version.

    • Yes but I don't think it will be heavily discounted as it has the popular hdmi ports.

  • It is difficult to setup and very uninformative instruction. How did you guy got it to work with your 5GHZ wifi? I am using Asus88u router.
