Why Do Single Parent's Get Free Driver's Licence or Discounts?

I've always wondered why do Single parents who often have the 'Pensioners card' from Centalink they are getting free Driver's Licence or discounts? they often are receiving benefits already while I'm a full tax paying person and have to fork out over $354 for a driver's licence? something not right here?? BTW why should a Pensioner get a discount anyway? they would have to be more rigorously tested, as they often make mistakes while driver such as hitting the accelerator instead of the brakes! crashing into fences, shops, etc..

These people generally have less, so it is a way the government helps redistribute wealth.

    Obvious troll is obvious.

If life is so good as a welfare recipient, with all this free stuff, then why are you working? Maybe post it as a deal.

This is why we need to be able to downvote forum threads…

Best reasoning I have ever read.

I will remember it and I will repeat it.
      Thank you indeed.

yeah, but if you don't work for cash, they reduce the centrelink payments, so its not worth it.

    • Remember some people on the pension can work limited hours. This might help them do that.

If they work enough to receive a reduced pension, that's less of your tax money. You win, see?

I lived next door to a pensioner. I can tell you these "discounts" do jack in terms of help. This guy only had enough to maintain basic food and shelter, even on a social level he didnt keep friends in case he got invited out and didnt have money for a meal, to save embarrassment. Redistribution of wealth is necessary to maintain social balance. The tax you pay doesnt affect you as much as it helps him.

Yes - the pension (without child support that youngum’s have added) is way below subsistence level.

Australian's are greedy & that's why there is no more industry left here in a zombie economy. So when a single mom or any other living rough gets some benefits it ruffles alot of feathers but when the rich don't pay their fair share it's considered smart investing.

We don't live in America. It's spelt "mum" not "mom".

      • -3

So, of all the grammatical and spelling errors in sidewinder’s post, you picked the only thing that wasn’t actually wrong. While “we” don’t live in ‘Murcia, Sidewinder might.

        I’m pretty sure that on the immigration test for Australia, one of the questions is;

        Mum or mom, pick one.

And when you say “America”, did you mean North or South?

        • +2

          It's 'Murica, not 'Murcia.

          Murcia is in Spain.

          @MrBear:

LOL… Well, made a little typo and it still turned out to be a place that spoke Spanish… TIL. :D

        • And when you say “America”, did you mean North or South?

          Central.
          'cause you never know …

        • @MrBear:

          It's 'Murica, not 'Murcia

          Isn't 'merica ? ? ?

  • You may to spend a minute or two in research before you embarass yourself with such a rubbish claim.

https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/your-ps/free-licenc… where Victorian under-25's get a free licence for three years.

It will be fun to see you bleating about this if you ever get to Age Pension age.

Because many single parents only earn enough money to keep them afloat or sometimes not even that? You have to consider the costs for food, rent/mortgage, debts, bills, daycare, fuel, the list goes on. They're far more likely to worse off than most people. Children growing up are not cheap.

I work full time, pay a heap of tax and not in a defacto. I can afford to eat out, go on holidays and impulse buy on OzBargain, but if times get tough I can cut it all down to only the necessities. Unfortunately single parents are far less likely to have those luxuries, especically considering that we often consider these luxuries to be a normal part of our life.

You really need to learn how to put yourself in other people's shoes. It's an important life lesson and will make you a better (and less angry) person.

op is from sydney. he is probably a bit bitter for having to pay full price while assuming that other residents are getting a free ride.

    you're confused.

a pensioner concession card as issued by the dhs is based on the recipients government payment.

the recipient having a senior moment isn't the only criterion for a pensioner concession card.

In N.S.W you don't have to be a pensioner or on centrelink to get a discount. They have a safe driver scheme, where you get 50% off if you qualify, my renewal in November cost $167 for a 10 year license.

    I stopped reading at 'Centalink'

lol Centalink. Maybe government subsidised spelling lessons are in order.

In answer to your question, CL government benefits are means tested and requirement based. And from my experience they make your life hell trying to claim them to the point where you wonder if it's all worth it.

With a lesson on apostrophes too.

you lost me at 'centalink'. Bet you would one day also, receive benefits?

  • In some instances, ie widows, it makes sense. Otherwise, it's just socialism at work.

If you've made poor decisions in life, the government is here to bail you out. The importance of cultural values such as abstinence and monogamy are mistaken for "patriachy" until an unwanted pregnancy occurs, suddenly it's a collective liability and "unforseen circumstances".

Huh. I gotta call my mom and dad. I'm no longer poor.

      • if you’re going to quote do it including context.

“Well, change to the fuel excise does exactly that; the poorest people either don’t have cars or actually don’t drive very far in many cases. But, they are opposing what is meant to be, according to the Treasury, a progressive tax.”

  • You really need to grasp the bigger picture. No offense but it looks like you have a mono way of thinking. You should have really done your research before posting.. I read your description and thought 'Really'

In Tassie, there's lots of pensioner/health card freebies and discounts. The State government — our current Libs no less — use tax revenue (your tax dollars, OP. But only yours cos it's marked) for TV advertising to encourage people to check their website to find what they're entitled to.

I mean…what kind of magic pudding Utopia is this?!
    (Rhetorical)

  • Ah, it must be this post, OP's frothing trying to get a refund from RMS.

  • The OP is weird.

Why lump single parents and pensioners together?

In QLD license renewal has no discounts.

Eligible Pensioners are allowed discount registration in 1 car.

I can tell you, the financial and asset mean testing is rigorous as are reviews. They also constantly monitor bank accounts and ATO records. Dealing with them is time consuming, frustrating and they make everything much harder than it should be.

the Federal government have axed pensioner subsidies and so there is only state and local government ones.

  • Gosh. Every gets old. One day your own (op) comments in the post above will haunt you.

  • +3

TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR INCOME AND A PENSIONERS INCOME AND CHECK UP ON CENTRELINK RULES AND REGULATIONS,BUT I DO NOT THINK YOU WILL AS YOU WOULD NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO WHINGE

  • I'm almost 99% sure OP is trolling because no one can be this stupid but then I have read this guy's stuff before and he's scary.

I think OP is referring to NSW's 10yr license which is $354.

No one is asking you to do this… you can do a $167 5yr license and forget about it until 2023…

  • OP's gone quiet.
