Find Me a Bargain: PC with 8 SATA slots

My Synology has crashed just before moving everything onto my new QNAP :( .

It seems I can fix the crash with a Linux live cd and a PC with 8 SATA ports to fix, are there any cheap pre-made models to look at? I really can't be bothered building but may have to I guess if you boffins cant help :)

  • Could you use a PCIe SATA card (or 2) or does the PC have to natively have 8 SATA ports?

    • I am unsure I did see someone use a 2 drive USB dock for a 2 bay recovery though so it is possible perhaps?

No Synology Support atm and I cant find a phone number in AU..

  • How did it crash? Dead drive/s or something else?

    • It was my fault, I had this DSM 1812+ Since 2012, I was updating some hard drives and I thought it was day 2 so I could do my next drive but it was only day one and I pulled out drive 3 while drive 7 was still being added to the raid. :(

      • oh bugger :(

      • I hate it when that happens

      • This happens to me like every other day, its the worst

  • +1

I haven't researched or have any experience on the recovery process but going by your requirement I believe the best(and the cheapest) method would be purchase a used 8 port SATA/SAS raid card off eBay - You will need the splitter cables too BTW (Hoping you have a PSU capable of powering 8 x SATA disks with the rest of the computer and enough SATA power connectors)

  • A Morty has a broken NAS. An infinite number of universes and that's still a constant in this one.

That's why you don't get to pick the adventures.

  • Its fixed! Synology remoted in and I am now repairing it :)
