Questions for Qantas Silver Tier Holders

Hey all,

About to receive my Silver status for Qantas but my partner is lacking behind on status points for the remainder of her membership year. Have some questions on Silver status and if it's even worth her getting it. Was hoping to get some opinions on a couple of things:-

1) Seating Privileges. If I make a booking for me and my partner but only myself being silver tier, does that mean I can choose my seat but she can't? or is seat privileges against the booking that is made and not the person.

2) Priority Check in. I've missed flights before and being able to check in at the business counters is an awesome privilege. Just wondering if they'll let me and my partner check in though if only one of us are silver tier.

3) Keeping Silver status. The site isn't really clear and states: "Each tier status starts from the moment you reach it†, to the end of the next, full membership year." Does this mean I only have 12 months from the time I earn silver status to rack up 250 status points to retain it for the following year?

Thanks heaps!

    1. AFAIK it applies to everyone on the same booking

    2. Yes

    3. No. 12 month plus whatever remaining membership year you've got so potentially 23 months of status.

  • 1 Agree, Always use the better membership as primary ticket holder, If booked together on same transaction they keep you together if it's seperate i.e company sending both of you, you have to get Qantas to link the passengers. (its easier to reserve seats online unless gold or platinum) they generally reserve better seats for the higher members based on preference.
    2 agree
3 It starts and finishes on the anniversary mine is March so as long as i earn the status credits i need by the end of the following March it's cool, I gained points required by August to retain the current membership so i have 12 months from end of next March 2019 they also zero your Status credits at the time so if you had almost enough to make it to next level tough they just add to lifetime status I've missed platinum by 10 points through this and they do nothing to help even though i still had a return flight that would have give me it if i could have returned 2 days earlier,

I've quit sweating it if i'm travelling a lot personally i salary sacrifice it as we get a corporate rate cheaper than trying to fit extra flights in @ work otherwise i've got lifetime silver for the next few years at least that does me. if they don't change it too much I'll get the lifetime gold in 3 or 4 years

Just like in sport, silver just means you are the first loser.

Gold status is what you want at a minimum otherwise not much benefit with silver.

    I'm a lifetime bronze

  • cant you choose your seat for free no matter what tier you are?

    • Seat selection on Qantas International is $35. Depending on what ticket you bought, (saver, economy etc), it may or may not be included. You also get options for better seats depending on your tier. They open more up for selection closer to the departure day.

    • The seat selections they offer are restricted by your status. As your status goes up, the options open up. I recently flew to Sydney and after having my booking linked to my boss' who is platinum, I went from having ~6 seat options (bronze status) to ~60 options.

Sadly Silver status gives no real benefits over Bronze. It is Gold that is very worthwhile.

You can checkin at Business Counter only if Gold+ or flying Business

It says this on the qantas website:

      Priority check-in
When flying domestically, you can check-in at the Premium Service Desk. For international flights, use the Business counters when available for check-in, regardless of your class of travel.

    • Kenb0 is right this changed a while ago

    1. You can book seats for anyone that is on the same booking reference as you.

    2. You can check in with anyone who is travelling with you, although I don't think silver gets you business class check in.

    3. You need to earn your 250 status credits in your next membership year. Let's say your membership year finishes on 30 June 2018. You will be silver until 30 June 2019. You need to earn 250 status credits between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019 to keep silver until 30 June 2020, etc.

  • Unless things have recently changed I agree with Seraphin7 re business class checkin.
I always checkin online as soon as the flight opens.
I am also unsure what Priority Check in means in reality

    • Priority check-in
When flying domestically, you can check-in at the Premium Service Desk. For international flights, use the Business counters when available for check-in, regardless of your class of travel.

Priority check-in refers to the check in counters when you do a bag drop after you've online checked in. International Economy counters (at least in Melbourne airport) are usually packed with long lines during morning flights, even for online check in counters, so being able to use the empty business class counters is quite a benefit.
