AAMI Insurance - Siding with Person That Reversed into Car at Shopping Centre

Need some advice for my Dad.

He was in a shopping centre carpark, a lady reversed her car into him and caused damage on her car and his car. She is claiming that my father was at fault…even though the dimwit reversed into him. My dad has contacted the shopping centre and they have footage of her reversing into him too.

Issue though is AAMI ia both their insurers the woman has full insurance and my dad only has 3rd party…so AAMI are siding with the woman.

What can my dad do?

He has been told by the shopping centre they can only supply video to insurance or police. So my dad has asked AAMI to contact the shopping centre to obtain the video.

If they still side with this woman anyone know what options my Dad has?

  • In my experience, sometimes the person taking the call for the case can screw up; don't know if this is systemic in insurance companies or outsourced call centers. So much of time wasted with people who provide incorrect information and at the end all you get at best is a humble apology. Even if AAMI does turn around now and apologize, they have made you waste your time and cause additional stress; I wish there was a way for them (and other large highly profitable companies) to pony up for that. We have no way of knowing how many people have decided it's not worth a fight.

Persistence and patience will likely get you the outcome you are hoping for. Best of luck.

  • Your lucky your with AAMI. AAMI have never been the cheapest for me, everytime i get a quote, it's always GIO or NRMA.

Thanks for the post. I'm with aami and will be looking for alternatives due to your dad's experience. I've set a reminder on Google calendar.

lol, you're basing your decision on an internet post that may or may not be true (remember 3 sides to every story) and the fact that the final outcome is not yet known despite all the hysteria on this site. Good luck with your new insurance company which I'm sure will have dozens of similar internet stories. Search for ANY insurer on prodcutreview and you'll find hundreds of negative stories.

There's no motive for the OP to shitpost against aami like that.
Even if the outcome is favourable, I don't want to go through this sort of stress if someone crashes into me.
Same as a mate of mine who had to sort out the will for his deceased parents, BT super tried not to release the superannuation and took months. Never going to deal with that company either as it'll just be stressful.

Unfortunately my dad has had a very similar experience with AAMI.

Vehicle traveling in right lane didn't head check, merged left into him, hit him and forced him of the road onto the grass.

Had witnesses stop and provide name and number for insurance. Both parties were with AAMI, my dad had full comprehensive. AAMI told him he's at fault and had to pay up and never contacted the witnesses.
I tried to get him to take it further but for whatever reason he didn't. He just paid the excess and moved onto another insurance company.

Seems like AAMI are just useless.

  • Go to cop shop ask them to investigate they contact shopping center ask for video.

    • cops are not interested in the paper work.

Fark I hate ppl who lie. I had an old bitch reversed into my missus car and we spent 40min trying to get her license details. Lucky we found a witness. There should be a law to lock up these ppl as it fraud.

    • citizens arrest? she committed a "crime" trying to run from it so hold her as long as u can until police arrive

      • so hold her

Not worth the trouble in nsw.

If they don’t put up any resistance, you don’t necessarily even need to touch them.

Be aware that any harm that is caused to them as a result of the arrest could potentially leave you open to criminal charges of your own.

        • true they will play the victim game

We were also with AAMI and my partner was involved in an accident, third party insurance on our car. Although we had multiple independent witnesses, AAMI without hesitation said 'We will be admitting fault on this' … We are no longer customers for obvious reasons…

third party insurance on our car.
AAMI without hesitation said 'We will be admitting fault on this'

that makes absolutely no sense. why did you claim with your insurer when the other driver was at fault?

  • Definitely take this higher
I had a similar incident where the car was reversing out the his spot and his the front of my car
Insurance company said was my fault as I hit the back of his car

Think I only went as high as the complaints department of the insurance company (didn't need go to Insurance ombudsman) but I basically argued my point across (I was stationary and the other party initiated the contact) and they caved in

    Also; AAMI are scum
They wanted me to pay excess on another incident where I was clearly not at fault and that they will refund the excess back IF they find the other party was at fault
I told them to eff off and I won't be paying the excess until they complete the investigation
Took them months to complete the investigation but they finally said I wasn't at fault and no need to pay excess
I'm guessing it would've been like getting blood from stone to get that refund if i had paid upfront

  • I have 2 dashcam front and back and going to buy another 2 for left and right. I got hit from front twice and both recorded. No drama.

  • I had 3rd party with AAMI a few years ago. From memory it was around $700 for my car at the time and when it came time to renew, it jumped up to around $900 despite me not making a claim during that year. This was for 3rd party insurance!

I called them up to protest the increase in fees and mentioned if I went onto their online calculator it was significantly lower than my renewal fees, but still a fair bit higher than what I paid the previous year. They told me that online quote calculator is just for new customers and it's normal for the fees to increase the way they did. I didn't want to argue, I wanted to leave at that point.

Within a week I jumped over to Progressive where I've had comprehensive cover for a bit over $600 per year the last 3 years.

I don't get a hire car with progressive, don't get to choose repairer and I put the excess at over $1500 to get the rate I did. Touch wood I'm a very safe driver (have front and rear dashcams too that activate with motion), so I would go with who ever is the cheapest for comprehensive cover just for the peace of mind.

It's been over 10 years since I made a claim, screw AAMI.

    • Check the user reviews for progressive online. That will tell you all you need to know

      • I did.

They have as bad ratings as a lot of the others, only they were half the price.

          Ha ha great reply!

You were paying an extraordinary amount for TPPD cover (nearly 5x too much) and you're carrying a very high excess now compared to the premium. You must be driving a pretty exotic car.

My experiences with insurance claims, whether it's car or otherwise - expect initial push back. Just keep standing your ground if you know you're in the right. Other people just give in and the company saves a bunch of money. It's a business model that works. It's also not good business sense to take a small matter to court. Keep on them about this and hold your ground.

Not sure what AAMI's social media presence is like though it can be a good tool to ask the question there: How can someone be at fault when someone backs into their stationary car?

  • I read through a bunch of comments none of them mentioned it's in your insurance's interest to have this sorted for you. If your deemed at fualt they will obtain the nessary footage. I would be contacting them ASAP and everything will probably be delt through them.

  • My father made a follow up with AAMI as the USB with footage was mailed on 29th March. They're claiming they never got it. They are apparently going to call the shopping mall to get another copy mailed.
