25 Metre Ethernet Cable / Secondary Router / Replacement Main Router

Doing a router to router WiFi extension via wired cables.. using NBN FTTP installation.

Need a 25 metre Ethernet cable 24 AWG maybe lower just in case for further signal strength in case I want to further relocate the router in my room or upstairs in the attic for more WiFi coverage.

Also taking cheapest options for a good secondary router for extending the WiFi upstairs via cable. Usage upstairs is normally around 3 people max.

Current modem router connected to the NTD (White box) is a fast 3864 sagemcom model I.e default Optus router modem. Any recommendations for upgrade is well recommended and will be happily received.

So to recap

  • 25 metre ethernet cable 24 American Wire Gauge aka thicker wire for better signal strength (main necessity need now asap)
  • need new secondary router (using a cheap tp link one for now afraid it can't handle fast proper NBN with multiple devices)
  • replacement of primary router (fast 3864 sagem with/from optus)

Cheers thanks Ozbargain.

  • Merged from Replacement for F@ST3864V2 (Optus Default Router for FTTP and Voice)

So I think the F@ST3864V2 which is a sagemcom board is super outdated.

The log in interface has a copyright date of 2005-2014.. yeah

So am looking for appropriate replacements with I believe voice service in them not sure if that refers to VOIP or not but it is in the model number F@ST3864V2

Will be purchasing a secondary router if the replacement alone doesn't fix my two storey house problem.

Doesn't help that the cordless phone sits right next to it but oh well.

Already purchased a 25m 23AWG cat6 Ethernet cable for around $37 Aussie bucks scheduled to come this Friday 6th April 2018 as a just in case.

Looking at Netgear Nighthawk and Asus products but coming here first and whirlpool forums for some good recommendations that would fit with a FTTP connection (the NTD white box is inside the house).

Don't mind spending a bit on the router as it is a major source of usage for the whole family at least 5+ members easily at any given time and 4x as much devices minimum so might need something beefy that can handle a large lan party haha.

Don't wanna pay more than $500 AUD but something above $300 AUD is a very good investment.. hell maybe $450 might even be worth it that's like 6 months of modern internet prices?

Anyways Ozbargain I come to you in a time of need.. normally I would research this stuff myself (which I have but can't seem to find the answers) but I am fully spent atm and trying to fix this before I get back home mainly for my sister who is studying in uni right now atm and for those occasional discord plus PUBG mobile English games :)

p.s. fortnite mobile for android should hopefully be coming soon in a month or two max six people say.. or so they say.

    Thanks again Ozbargain.

  • Where r u located, I have the cables

    • Right now near Lidcombe.

  • +2

I don't understand the issue buying a network cable, especially the gauge requirement…which is not normally applicable for the network cable.

The easiest solution would be to go to your local Bunnings and buy 25 meters of CAT6 (or CAT5e) cable. Any CAT6 cable will be far faster than your NBN and will easily hold 1Gbps over 25-meter length.

I have a similar setup at home, with CAT5 cable, 20-meter length, bridging 2 routers. Both routers have gigabit ports and close to gigabit transfer rate between them.

    • 25 metre ethernet cable 24 American Wire Gauge

Nah, don't do that, make sure it's 24 Australian Wire Gauge, rookie mistake. :) What andyvolk said.

  • TL;DR: AWG

You didn't say how fast your NBN connection is.

Main router, get Netgear D7000. Was on sale few days ago. Might as well use it on your secondary. And do you know how to wired up your RJs?

  • Plug the PC direct to the NTD and see what speed you get.
Mate was complaining to me how crap his new Optus NBN HFC is. Only yesterday we did the direct connection and he was getting on midday Sunday between 3 to 8 Mbps to local Internode and Optus servers on Speedtest when he has a 12/1 connection.
Effectively they are charging him the same price for a HFC connection he already had before the NBN at 30/1 and supplying him near 1/4 of that speed.

    • Need it for extending the signal for mobile devices not a pc otherwise yeah I would be wired in already by now.
