Sure, why not. Be safe. Less worry whilst you are on holiday.

Why not? If offing it wont cause a problem then yes…

      • LOL, I actually expected this answer from your original post. Do you know anything about your solar gas hot water system? If there is a power switch then switch it off, if you don't know anything, call the installer or just leave it as it is…

There are also gas valves that are attached to it so that's why I'm asking

IF you're turning off the water to it, then you should also turn off the gas

    • Gas at the main meter or the valve/tap at the outside tank?

      • Outside the tank is fine

      • On the tank is safest

You shouldn't turn it off. Most storage water system will heat the water to over 75C every 24 hours to kill in bacteria etc that will build up in water stored in tanks. If you turn the gas off then the water may become unhealthy especially after a couple of weeks.

Most water meters have a wheel or indicator on them to show if there is any slow leaks just check that every so often.

  • Don't turn electricity off! My friend made that mistake and came back to a stinky fridge…

We set timed lamps so it looks like someone is still at home.

  • I’ve never turned any of that stuff off. Never had a problem either. It would be better to have someone check on you house a few times while away. You do t turn off the utilities when you go to work or out for a day trip do you?

Mostly water leaks are as a result of turning things in and off. Ie Tap washers wearing out, Water hammer from turning on/off taps causing broken pipes. Just having it sit there shouldn’t cause any issue. You are probably more likely to cause leaks by having your tap seals dry out.

Find your instruction manual for the water heater and follow the procedure if you must turn it off. If you do it wrong you might need to buy a new one.
