Buying Used PC from Friend - What Is Fair Price?

So I am buying a used computer off a friend who no longer plays games. It's been used for about a year and seems in decent shape. I'm just wondering what a fair price for a pc with these specs is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
He is offering to sell it with or without the HDD. I don't mind either way. HELP PLS. :)

Edit 1:
I've decided to buy it off him for $500. Seems a decent price for me and doesn't seem that bad for him either. Thanks for your help OZB. As a final question, Are there any tests/checks i can run before buying it, just to confirm everything is in decent shape. Thanks. 😀

Edit 2:
Alrite, i bought it off him for $450 without the HDD. He said it had his data and he didn't wanna part with it. I was fine with that. Tested it all out at his house and everything seemed to be in good order, was abit dusty but thats to be expected. I have a spare laptop hdd 500gb, threw that in for now, ill worry about SSD later. Need to find a cheap ass monitor and keyboard now…. Budget PC for lyfeeee.

    $438.27 with HDD
    $402.56 without HDD

    • subtract the GST though since it's not new.

  • Ar? 1 year? this spec looks like a 3+ years old pc……
if it is under $200 maybe worth a little and depends on how high spec of gaming you need, you need to add on a new graphic card + SSD. may cost you another $300+

The gpu alone is still worth $250 and more than capable today with the correct in game settings

The CPU is a 3 year old design but was a bloody good one at the time. Non k version still worth $150

      • Exactly that… I dont mind getting an Ssd for it. and the games i play, the current gpu does the job easily. might just need to upgrade ram.

Ram is fine. Even DDR3 ram is overpriced at the moment. It's actually 1600mhz (dual channel will halve clock speed)

You will need a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

What titles do you intend to play?

        • +1

RAM is expensive right now, and though most of us buy a bunch of it anyway, for other reasons, a little research shows almost no games that benefit from having more than 8GB, even today.

        • @TightBottom:
Probably PUBG, i dobt mind running newer games at low settings. Not that fussed about my graphics. I actually need this more as a general home office pc with the ability to run abit of gaming in my downtime. the specs match my needs, was just wary of the price since its 2nd hand

The CPU is an i7 4770. That alone still sells for $400 by itself.

      It's got a GTX 970. Not exactly a low-end GPU. There's literally no game it can't play. Most people don't need a GTX 1080.

An SSD isn't exactly a "need" either. Not like it will make a difference to gaming (except load times).

  • His was asking for $800 at the time…
    Got him down to $500.

Fair price. You could part it out for profit so I would buy at that price.

      • Any benchmarks i should run before buying?

  • What brand and Wattage is the PSU?

    • Good question. i cant remember the brand, but i know its 750W

      • +3

Yep. Well tbh, the whole system is decent therefore I doubt it will be a cheapie.
        Especially powering a GTX970.
$500 is an awesome price IMO.
        Take it and run!
        Cheers

I reckon about $500 is a fair price.

  • $400 if no HDD. $500 with HDD and OS.

    • 500 with 1tb hdd, he asked for 450 without the HDD. no SSD though. but ill probably just get a 120gb cheap ssd and plop that in.

      • Just use it first. HDDs are quite cheap anyway if you decide to upgrade in future. So all you need is 120 or 240gb SSD.

  • You can download a trial version of Futuremark for testing.

However, I'm sure if you have a close friendship, he/she will help you out if something is not up to scratch/working correctly.

For comparison, I saw this going for $650 a few days ago:

    i7 3960x Six cores/12 threads
    12GB DDR3 Ram
    GTX 960 2GB
    New 240GB SSD+ 500GB HD 7200RPM
    Liquid cooler
    Dual band wireless card
    875W PSU
    Windows 10
    Pick up.

$500 for what you're getting is a good price.

Even this system is a very good price.

That CPU supports only X79 - Socket 2011 motherboards and they are rare now but were very expensive.
The 3960X will annihilate the 4770
That CPU was around $1200 new

Edit: If you could get this below $600 tbh .. this is better.

      Cheers

Yeah, I built a similar system way back then. I couldn't justify the extra for the 3960x and ended up going with the 3930K. It's still running great, with no need for an upgrade any time soon.

Sadly, that PC went pretty quickly. It was up on Facebook, either on Computer Parts Buy Swap Sell Melbourne Australia, or Australian PC Parts Buy, Swap & Sell.

      • The 3960X will annihilate the 4770

Haha that's 2x better gaming performance than my ancient i5 2500 for 20x the price

        • +1

I totally agree, however I was referring to the current price point of secondhand top ended cpu (system) vs the price new. Hence it flew out the door without wings.

I will never spend that kind of money on a CPU as in electronics; the usual Parabolic curve, best value for money & performance …
Which at that time was the I7 3930K as @OverburdenedWarrior and I actually have as well.

It is still quick and worth every dollar I paid for it ~ $580 new around 4 years ago.

          Cheers

You should never buy from a friend whatever the price is as if a dispute arises in the future you will lose a friend! Is it worth it?

  • recently aldi had a $599 PC with 13 8th gen and everything in it. 2 yr warranty. no monitor which I am buying separately.

2 also bought origin pc bundle 13 7100 with aoc 24 in monitor for $600 + bought windows pro separately.

  • $400 would be fair, due to the GTX 970. Most of the value in that PC is in that card. Without that card I'd pay around $150 for the PC.

PC is not a year old, the CPU is 4 generations back, so about a 3 year old PC.

The GTX 970 will still give you decent gaming performance, it's only one generation back from current and a mid-high end card.
