Using Credit Card (Paypass) to Pay for Ferries and Light Rail in NSW in stead of Opal

Government have spend big money to set up Opal system, Including investment on the Opal card technology.

Now we are start using our credit card to tap on and tap off on public transport. It is convenience for the daily commuters but all the money it goes to the investing on Opal card is such a wasted.

Shop which do opal top up will soon start to resign from the system as no one is going to top up at their shop except for the shop small month.

what is your thought?

Luckily the Victorian government does not waste money.

  • There'll be a surcharge for sure. Anyway the readers are the same so that infrastructure isn't wasted. Only another payment backend is needed, so just an IT enhancement. Also kids won't be using Paypass, and pensioners less likely.

Also notice those modes of transport are where you tap on entry to the transport as they won't be checking cards with readers. So not for trains and buses unless they issue some sort of proof of payment. And how would transfers work with CC/DCs? Probably not.

You only get discounts if you use an opal card. For regular commuters an opal card will still be cheaper.

Using a credit card will be useful for those who are visiting or only make occasional trips.

    • you mean CC tap will cost the same as paper ticket ?

      • I think it will be the same price as opal price not paper ticket paper price.

        • It's the same price as buying a Opal ticket from the Opal machine if you use your credit card to tap on i.e. it'll cost more than $2.60 if you buy a Opal ticket on Sunday

        • @kerfuffle:

So we need to pay for the fee i.e. the cost to produce the opal paper ticket? But we are not using the paper ticket? This is purely revenue generation.

        • @LoveBargain15: I assume so.

        • @LoveBargain15: Excuse me, where are you coming from in all this - No paper ticket = "revenue generation" as it saves money.

Who F "owns" the government. Its us

So isnt it really cost saving - which means less revenue needs to be generated.

Plus it saves the environment, no treees for the paper and no litter in the drains, etc

You sound like someone who just likes to look at the negatives.

        • @RockyRaccoon:

I think it is all come to a fairness. If they deduce the cost to produce the paper ticket it is about $0.50.

Althrough we own the trains but is that means we can get ripped off?

I love saving the environment dont get me wrong but this is not what I argue about.

        • @LoveBargain15: 50c a ticket, these arent even anywhere near close to the cost. Having some knowledge of something similar - phone cards of years ago, these were only a few cents each , and they even had a chip in the card.

Comeon buddy, you are just again trying to make a mountian out of a molehill. So they invest millions into making Credit cards work with OPAL, and save a cent on a paper ticket.

You really need some life experience.

        • @RockyRaccoon:

          this is call transparency.

You really need not to judge people with your own life experience IMO.

you can move onto the next forum topic now. Thank you for your input.I heard what you have to say.

  • You have to consider that non-locals and tourists also use the network and as such, may not access or are hesitant to used their CC.

  • what about the discounts you get from e-gift card and topup from coles/woolies.

    • They are taking it as profit

It is convenience for the daily commuters but all the money it goes to the investing on Opal card is such a wasted.

In this you are SOOO Wrong.

Its not a convenience for DAILY commuters.

Its a convenience for the casual commuter, or tourist,

The Daily and Weekly etc get discounted rates if they use their OPAL card. Same with anyone having a concession fare.

You fall into the trap thinking the OPAL system exists in the CARD. OPAL is the backend billing and calculations, the CARD is just a method by which you can access the backend. Thats also how the CC works.

You have to stop watching Trash TV and start thinking for yourself.

Someone enhances a system, and they twist this enhancement to make for NEWS. No wonder we get crap governments, as they have to watch whatever they do, someone will criticise for the sake of making news/political capital.

  • They need to follow London's.
