Citibank Signature Card Automatically Cancelled

Hi guys,

Thanks to the brilliant users of this website I applied for a Citibank Signature card many years ago with no annual fee for life.

Long story short, I've got a letter from them last year saying that I haven't been using the card for two years now, and they will close my credit card on such and such date if I don't use it before then.

I did use it once and kept it active. However I just found out that they have now automatically closed my credit card because I have not been using it for 6 months.

Anyone else in the same boat?

It's a pity that means I have now lost my Priority Pass membership…

  • have you read the *

    • Good point. I've read the * of the offer but not the thick booklet.

You should of setup some kind of monthly charge on that card to keep it active, maybe a mobile phone or internet bill.

    • Thanks for the idea. Lesson learnt.

I never used it for more than 2 years never received that kind of notice. Same card, got it many many years ago. But I'm worry now

Thanks OP. Sorry for your loss but thanks for sharing that with us. A good lesson too for those with other cards rarely used, where the cards have benefits.

  • It is true the CC will be cancelled if you are not using for 2 years.

However, if you call them and explain that you did use it, they could reinstate it because they did offer to reinstate mine once (not on Signature but on another card).

    Do try. Wouldn't hurt.

    • Thanks. I tried and she kept repeating that I can only reapply. Maybe I will try another operator.

  • I got a similar letter from Suncorp credit card which is managed by Citibank. I never wanted to use that card, so no regrets.

  • buahaha i got the email just now

    Dear xxx
We have notice you have not used your Citi account for almost 2 years. To ensure your account remains open, please see attached for more details.

but the attached letter says i just need to make A purchase before end of May 2018. just one. and i assumed i will only get notified again close to 2 years from May 2018?

    • That's what I thought last year. But apparently that's not the case…

      • i just made a call to the customer service 1800 number. the guy confirmed just one small purchase any amount and it will reset again (means i have almost 2 years before get notified again).

well… did you complained and pointed out that in the letter it says "made a purchase" ?

        • I complained and she said it was automatically cancelled due to 6 months being inactive. I think it is separate to the 2 years letter (it happened 6 months after I got the letter and made a purchase). But I'll try again tonight.

        • @sjfhsueh: hmm.. weird. for me i will wait one week and then make 2-3-4 small purchases (maybe 4x $1 lollies haha) across 3 days if i remember. thats all. if they still cancel then cancel it is.

          @sjfhsueh:

          Try again and again

What I've learnt with banks who use Philipino call centre is, they are hopeless. Say completely wrong things. Say a different thing each time. And don't have any common sense

  • Yes, they made me furious. Cancelled my Citiplus Saver account which they say I did not use, as I used it during overseas holidays only to withdraw cash from ATMS. When I called to reinstate they said no, I had to reapply. The first time I applied I remember it was a headache. But I have to now reapply as I need it for overseas again. Is there any other savings account that is good for overseas cash withdrawals without foreign fee?

      • Thanks. I still like the Citibank Plus best among the rest, have to reapply. Already have 28 degrees but then that one is more for credit card transactions.

        • Had you not used Citiplus 'at all' over a long period, or had you only used it at ATMs and not for purchases over a long period?

@Peck: Only used it for ATM cash withdrawals overseas, it is not my preferred savings account. As it happened, I holidayed domestically for 2 years in a row, hence never needed the citibank account so got axed. What annoyed me, they did not even send an email or letter of reminder or warning. Just axed it like that and I found out too late just before visiting NZ. They would not even reinstate easily, said I had to reapply all over again w id checks etc.

Ok I just setup auto direct debit $10 every fortnightly for one of my bill. Should be safe lol

  • yep they did same to me once without even sending me a warning letter with my no annual fee coles diners club card . I had a tough time to reinstate it so be sure to make at least a $1 purchase every year with Citibank branded cards.
