Tethering 2 Different Phones as Home Wi-Fi

I'm trying to find a way to use my wife's and my mobile as WiFi hotspots in our home.

As we have Apple TV and Chromecast it's a pain to have to re configure if I've used my phone one day but want to use my wife's the next.
Is there a device I can set up that everything in the house connects to and then have that device auto connect to either phone via WiFi or USB?

  • Never tried it, but just doing a quick google now and apparently a lot of Asus routers with AsusWRT allows for tethering straight to the router with USB. Might be a good plan if you want to switch them over, and everything connects to that one router? Only issue I guess is you can't really use your phone unless you sit next to the router. Can't you just configure both phones' hotspot using same SSID and password. And just enable whichever hotspot when you need it. Your AppleTV and Chromecast will pick up whichever is ON.

    • Is that just a simple case of changing the hotspot name and passwords to the same or is there a setting for SSID?

      • Nope. Just make sure both hotspots have the same name (i.e. SSID) and password.

    • Where were you in my life a year ago? I had the same issue, super slow ADSL but phone plan with a lot of data belonging to bf. When he went out it would be a pain to connect to the ADSL if I wanted to watch TV and then annoying to reconnect when he came back. I didn't understand why the apple tv couldn't just remember several WiFi connections and connect to the best one like all laptops and my 3DS can do.
Anyway this tip would have saved me a lot of headache.

    • I had the same thought as that is how I have my two wifi routers setup at each end of the house to maximise range.
I guess it would work using two different phones as hotspots?
