With winter on the way, I went into Harris Scarfe yesterday to purchase a quilt as I noticed they were having a sale. Salesperson pointed out this deal, which ended up being cheaper than a Tontine wool quilt I was interested in and it came with bonus 2 pillows free. I was in the market for pillows.

  • How are these quilts and pillows? I need new ones, but not too sure where to start.

    • Have a chat to one of their manchester experts, I spoke to a bloke called Mario at Carindale, QLD. He was really helpful as he knew pretty much everything on a topic I had no idea about.

Or call and ask to talk to someone from a local store, then I recommend you go in and have a look at all the options and touch and feel the pillows, quilts etc. They also had some heavily discounted bed linen, ask a salesperson where they are as I had no idea until they were pointed out.

    Gainsborough ?
Same company that makes hardware (locks and stuff)?

    • pretty good excuse for running late in Winter… Sorry boss, i was locked in bed!

Don't fall for their sale, they are on sale 12 months of the year. Hugely inflated RRP and discounted to fool people.

  • Any recommendations on quilt and quilt cover?

First time buying these stuff as I don't live with my mum anymore :(

    many thanks

    • There's very little information about the Gainsborouigh quilt, but I guess it's just a very basic wool quilt with medium warmth. I can point you to some good stuff if you've got the cash. Got any idea about how much you want to spend?

Edit: a brief comment to get you started.

      • Hey Kahn,

thanks for helping me out. Looking at something under $100 since I don't think I can tell the difference between a good guilt and a bad quilt.

        • You might reconsider when you're itchy from bed bugs, sweat a lot, or feel weighted down!

Think about what warmth level(s) you seek and how heavy you want the quilt. The higher-priced quilts are usually composed of lighter filling material without sacrificing warmth. I'd recommend a quilt with stitched channels or pockets so the filling doesn't bunch up resulting in uneven cover and heating.

Were you only planning on having one quilt for year-round use or two quilts according to the room temperature? Proper quilt descriptions would offer a warmth rating like 1, 2, 3 blankets equivalent warmth. I recall seeing an option somewhere (I can look it up if you want) that allows you to clip together two quilts for colder weather.

I'm not sure what size you're after, but here's just one example of a mid-range quilt that's about $100. If you want something cheaper, then you might have to settle for wool.

Quilt covers vary greatly as you'd expect. If your $100 is meant to pay for both the quilt and cover, then ouch! You'd be looking at bargain options that aren't really worth the effort discussing. In terms of material quality, my opinion is that it goes like this: polyester < cotton < bamboo < linen < silk.

Let me know if you change your mind about your budget :-)

Edit: just noticed you're in QLD, so you'd be after a cooler quilt. I suggest a 1 or 2-blanket quilt for winter months and a single cotton/bamboo sheet for warm weather. It really depends on your room temperature.

        • @kahn: My apartment has pretty good insulation so it doesn't get that cold during winter, so the quilt doesn't need to be that heavy I suppose.

$100 is for quilt only, happy to spend extra for a cover. My bed is queen size.

I was thinking about this one here

          or is this one better?

        • @Homr:

Those links both go to page 10 of the catalogue that advertise multiple quilts. I wouldn't rate any of them highly and the descriptions are very short. Personally, I would avoid anything that claims to be for four seasons as that is rather meaningless. It's just an advertising gimmick. If you're in QLD and don't have cold temperatures in your bedroom during winter, then I'd suggest a 2 blanket warmth level for winter and just a single sheet for summer but it also depends if you wear pyjamas.

        • @kahn: I'm actually in Sydney, just realized my profile was still set to QLD, It's been changed now :)
