I'm looking for a phone/music device for my 5 year old son who loves music (currently using my old discman) and making videos. Basically an ipod touch but was hoping to find something cheaper/better image quality.
Since it won't really be used as a phone was thinking an Oppo, maybe a A57 or A73? Or does anyone else recommend anything else?

Bit of advice: make sure you get a phone or tablet that runs at least Nougat or Oreo. Set it up with Family Link via your own mobile to make it a fairly safe environment for your son. If he wants to install any apps, it can be set so you approve them via the Family Link app on your phone before they install on his device. Plus rating limitations in searches can be applied to apps, movies etc. If you have purchases on Google Play which are Family Library compatible, that purchased content can be automagically made available on your son's device (you choose which movies/TV shows are allowed). Heaps of other features in Family Link mode as well.
A second hand ipod touch

You only like music that is 5 years old?
For about $40 get a google home mini for music. He can talk to it and get it to play music. Plus the rest of the family can use it too.
Then for videos just get a second hand point-and-shoot digital camera.
No need to worry about him downloading apps or unsavoury content. And no need for expense of a whole phone.
Can't take it in the car though and plug headphones into it.
Cars have audio systems. Or if you mean something mobile, a portable radio is cheap.
Not sure if you have kids, but they often like to listen to stuff the grownups don't want to listen to. And you can't choose your own music on a portable radio, nor get decent signal on road trips :)
Ipod touch is a more practical solution.
