Was There an Increase in Traffic to OzBargain Yesterday?

I ask because ozbargain was mentioned on the today show on channel 9.

A guest (Charlie Brown) was discussing mobile phone plans and he mentioned that he "found a 30% off code on a site called ozbargain.com.au"

Just wondering if there was a flow on effect?

No increase that we can identify (mention at 8:57AM). It's difficult to measure incoming traffic from non-Internet sources (radio, tv etc.)

    Clip of mention

    • Looking at New Users is a good way to identify any impact from other sources.

      • But people may lurk for a while before registering.

        • New User in Google Analytics doesn't mean they are recently registered with the site. It means they haven't ever visited the website before (on that device or one that google can connect to them)

        • @Hellfire: Ah that kind of New User.

        • @Hellfire:

          Ah right.

          newuser1

          14% increase at 9AM, 4% at 10AM

          newuser2

          18% increase at 9AM, 7% at 10AM

However at 8AM, before the airing, there was a 27% and 24% increase in new users.

We had 12 referrals from 9 Saver where OzBargain was linked. That was 56th place in referrals so very low as well.

My guess would be it would have to do with cyclical traffic (hot deals, threads) rather than something that was mentioned on TV.

@neil: Is it just me or is data a beautiful thing?

          @pantsparty:

Yep, agree. Have you seen Data is Beautiful on Reddit?

        • @neil:

Hey Neil, there is definitely something causing that spike between 8-10am. Those are fairly large bumps. If most of the New Users are from Organic and Direct then I'd put money on it being from the TV.

8:00am means 8:00am - 8:59am so technically a TV segment aired at 8:57am would cause it to appear at 8:00am (and into 9:00am) in the report.

Sydney Trains was a mess yesterday, once again. All traffics were diverted to OzBargain.

    • I didn’t see a surge in uber or OLA referral codes.

Welcome back from the penalty box.

    • "Sorry everyone, all trains to Central are cancelled. Please hop onto our alternative service, All Stations to OzBargain".
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Make sure your Opal card is topped up, using 5% off WISH eGift Cards".

  • That's probably because everyone watching the show are already ozbargain members ;)

I didn't think anyone actually fully engages with these morning TV shows. I've always assumed it's used as background noise. And for people seeking funeral insurance.

    • The shopping channel cleverly disguised as a show with the general publics best interests at heart.
      Quite sad really.
